A new case report from the Centers for Disease Control released Thursday starkly highlights the costs of not vaccinating children. It details an unvaccinated 6-year-old boys encounter with tetanusand the hugely expensive, two-month-long effort it took to save his life.
Tetanus is caused by the namesake bacteria Clostridium tetani. More accurately, its what happens when the soil-loving C. tetani gets into your bodyusually through an open cutand spews out an extremely potent toxin. This toxin can quickly paralyze and send your muscles into constant spasms, beginning with the jaw (if you know anything about tetanus, its probably that it causes lockjaw). These spasms can then spread to the chest, back, and gut, leading to painful fractures, problems breathing, and even the complete loss of bowel control. Its a brutal disease, one that can take months to fully recover from. Even with treatment, 10 percent of victims ultimately die.
Thankfully, weve had a working vaccine for tetanus since the 1920s, and vaccination has virtually eliminated the disease in countries with decent healthcare. Most every person in the U.S. is fully vaccinated for tetanus by the time they enter school, with the first of five shots happening at the age of 2 months (booster shots every 10 years afterward are recommended). Unfortunately, that wasnt the case for the unnamed child in this report, since his family had chosen to not vaccinate him for any condition.
According to the authors, the 6-year-old boy from Oregon had gotten a forehead scrape while playing outside on a farm sometime in 2017. The wound was cleaned and sutured at home, but six days later the boy began experiencing lockjaw and muscle spasms. He then started arching his back and neck involuntarily and eventually could barely breathe, prompting his family to call for help.

I banged myself up so many times as a child that I do not know that I got a tetanus shot every time I got stitches. It might have just seemed like it. I don't remember getting any tetanus boosters when I was a kid other than when I had had some type of incident. Oh, and I am anti-mandatory-vax as well. Which I had to repeat over and over in a similar thread last month.
We have legislation in Washington State that is currently going through the legislature that will result in mandatory vaccinations and will be signed by our insane governor and upheld by our all liberal State Supreme Court.
The problem here is that the anti-vaxers have been responsible for so much misleading, dangerous and outright false information being spread that they have scared many responsible parents from getting their kids any vaccinations. One should be able to make a risk assessment on individual shots. Until the huge illegal immigration migration into this country most of the illnesses that these inoculations are meant to protect against had been eliminated so not wanting to expose your children to the known risks of inoculations was reasonable.
We know a number of families who home-school and have not had their children inoculated. In most cases they believe in eating only “all natural organic” foods, no candy, and a many home remedies for illnesses. I don't have a problem with this, except that some of them take it to screwball levels and the parents in some cases have passed on extreme paranoia about a number of issues to their older children especially.
I know a 19 year old girl who wanted to join the military, but she is afraid to because she is afraid of getting inoculated. I have known boys who wanted to become firefighters or police but are afraid to because they are afraid of getting inoculated.
One odd thing about the families that I know is that the families who are like this did not vote for President Trump as another poster alluded to in this thread. They were mostly Ted Cruz fans who could not accept that he had lost. So they mostly didn't bother to vote at all. The weirdest thing is that they are mostly are parents who have been heavy pot smokers and believe strongly that this is congruent with being “all natural” and a true conservative. It seems like there is a strange disharmony in some people's thought process related to heavy pot smoking that results in a distorted paranoia about anything related to large institutions. Not that this is completely unfounded in many cases but there is a strange disharmony in the thought process in many long term potheads.
I lost one of my very best long term friends ever just last month. He was the most amazing person that I have ever met. I would be quite pleased with myself if I was even half the man that he was. He spent his childhood in Africa where his parents were missionaries. He was only 71. He started having health problems a few years ago. It was mostly related to his vascular system breaking down. He had no family history of that.
He was a machinist and frequently came into contact with all sorts of solvents, lubricants and chemical cleaners. He was extremely thrifty and I do not remember ever seeing him wearing a pair of rubber gloves. I have to wonder if all those exposures to chemical agents didn't have something to do with his demise.
Without minimizing the difficulties of those who have had problems and have died with injuries related to asbestos... it just does not concern me that much more than other hazardous dusts that I have been exposed to during my life. I spent eight years working in a lumber reman plant where we made mostly cedar products. Cedar dust is also now known to make people sick. We never wore dust masks even when crawling into the dust collection system to clear clogs in the cyclone collector. I have spent the last three years restoring an old house. I saved the asbestos sheeting that I recovered from a few areas in the house and used pieces of it as a heat shield when I was soldering while putting in new copper pipes. The stuff is amazing, its no wonder that it was so widely used.
I handled it gingerly and used a dust mask when cleaning up areas that had suspect dust. I also wore a filter mask when taking down suspect ceiling popcorn and cleaning up the mess that made. At this point I take lots of precautions around dust because it can really clog me up and causes me to snore at night keeps my wife up as well.
They keep adding more and more shots to the schedule for more and more diseases.
Now, by the time the child is only 18 months old, he’s had more than 20 shots. And the shots continue after that. No wonder some parents balk at all the shots.
but to try to save a kid, they complain about the cost?....
let alone the billions we are taxed to save the drug addled, the drunk, the illegals, the cigarette smokers etc.....
re:
The wound was cleaned and sutured at home...
Eh, could we have a break?
Lemme see, had he gone to the clinic (or ER even) would he have been given a tetanus shot?

If they smoke, drink, and use drugs they won’t grow old.
If they live a clean life they’ll probably grow old.
You always end up paying for someone else.

re: “Vaccine industry is pure evil motivated only by profit”
TELL that to my Mom who contracted polio. Oh wait, you can’t she died last year ...
(She missed out on getting the polio vaccine by just a yr or so.)
Lemme see, had he gone to the clinic (or ER even) would he have been given a tetanus shot?
And that would be a problem, why?
We know a number of families who home-school and have not had their children inoculated.
My family has been around hundreds of other homeschool families through the years, every week, in homeschooled classes. There are no vaccine requirements in those classes. Yet, in all those years, not once was there ever an outbreak of the measles or even the chickenpox.
Most likely most of our children were inoculated. Most families aren't refusing all shots. I went along with every vaccination shot for each of my children and trusted the doctor's office to keep accurate records, UNTIL one day the doctor's office had some confusion with my children's immunization records. That's when I put the brakes on. I stopped trusting the doctors then and started looking into and thinking about each shot - and started keeping my own records.
They have a sterile suture kit at home? And the know-how on how to properly clean and suture a wound to prevent complications?
Not a chance
The case of lockjaw proves it
The media chooses this aberrant case of neglect to prove a point and some people on this forum eat it up like liberal viewrs of the view
How did the kid feet tge gash?
No one knows what it looked like
No one sutures wounds at home and if family protective services isnt on this case with their useless overworked investigators Id be surprised but thats missing in this story
This forum does not belong to you and your fellow Gnostics.
I agree. I also believe that other First world countries do not have near as many mandated vaccines. One example of an unnecessary vaccine motivated by less than stellar reasons is a HepB for infants. Infants of low risk healthy mothers.
I am in favor of vaccines against contagious diseases that contain a high risk of death or permanent disability. But think if possible before boosters are given blood work should be done to see how well a child is still protected.
Yaelle’s a gnostic? Who gnew?
I think your thinking is upside down on that one.
?? In what way
All matter is evil, and the non-material, spirit-realm is good. There is an unknowable God, who gave rise to many lesser spirit beings called Aeons. The creator of the (material) universe is not the supreme god, but an inferior spirit (the Demiurge). Gnosticism does not deal with "sin," only ignorance. To achieve salvation, one needs gnosis (knowledge). The Gnostic ideas and systems flourished in the Mediterranean world in the second century AD, in conjunction with and influenced by the early Christian movements and Middle Platonism. After the second century, a decline set in. In the Persian Empire, Gnosticism in the form of Manicheism spread as far as China, while Mandaeism is still alive in Iraq.
I dont think Im one.
Looking at mmmike’s profile page,
it’s probably best to avoid him.
An immunologic adjuvant is defined as any substance that acts to accelerate, prolong, or enhance antigen-specific immune responses when used in combination with specific vaccine antigens. Adjuvants allow for lesser quantities of the vaccine and fewer doses.
