It Took Two Months and Nearly a Million Dollars to Save an Unvaccinated 6-Year-Old From Tetanus

A new case report from the Centers for Disease Control released Thursday starkly highlights the costs of not vaccinating children. It details an unvaccinated 6-year-old boy’s encounter with tetanus—and the hugely expensive, two-month-long effort it took to save his life.

Tetanus is caused by the namesake bacteria Clostridium tetani. More accurately, it’s what happens when the soil-loving C. tetani gets into your body—usually through an open cut—and spews out an extremely potent toxin. This toxin can quickly paralyze and send your muscles into constant spasms, beginning with the jaw (if you know anything about tetanus, it’s probably that it causes lockjaw). These spasms can then spread to the chest, back, and gut, leading to painful fractures, problems breathing, and even the complete loss of bowel control. It’s a brutal disease, one that can take months to fully recover from. Even with treatment, 10 percent of victims ultimately die.

Thankfully, we’ve had a working vaccine for tetanus since the 1920s, and vaccination has virtually eliminated the disease in countries with decent healthcare. Most every person in the U.S. is fully vaccinated for tetanus by the time they enter school, with the first of five shots happening at the age of 2 months (booster shots every 10 years afterward are recommended). Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for the unnamed child in this report, since his family had chosen to not vaccinate him for any condition.

According to the authors, the 6-year-old boy from Oregon had gotten a forehead scrape while playing outside on a farm sometime in 2017. The wound was cleaned and sutured at home, but six days later the boy began experiencing lockjaw and muscle spasms. He then started arching his back and neck involuntarily and eventually could barely breathe, prompting his family to call for help.

Yes, she is still anti-vaccination. Kids going to have to wait till he’s 18 to get his vaccinations.

So then... you -can’t- explain why the illegals are infested with diseases eradicated here decades ago?

Think hard. And there must be something they don’t do in the third world that we do here. And there must be a reason those diseases decided to leave America a few decades ago.

It’s a real brain teaser.

Insane. She almost killed her son with her nutty misunderstanding of science, her 1880s medical skills, and she STILL sticks to her beliefs.

She’s an idiot. Maybe she should try a poultice next time.

"Anti-Vaxxers deserve all the karma they can get."

Are you up to date on all your booster shots?

Are you aware tetanus is not contagious?

Statists and "useful idiots" will be the ones getting a lot of karma.

Brevity, wit, and sarcasm is a true art form. Bravo. As my sister points out “stupid goes clear to the bone”. Apparently there’s no vaccine or experience that can cure some people of stupid. If the kid lives long enough maybe he’ll get away and survive, we’ve probably spent enough money to hope so. Abort the parents, save the kid.

Think about this, the company I worked for required I get a physical every two years.

I was on the Hazmat team so I had to get a very complete physical every year. Everyone on the fire department had to get their shots every year. So I had several shots a year for 25 years to help protect me against all the nasty stuff we assisted people with. I haven't actually had an inoculation since I retired. My wife thinks I should get the pneumonia shot since I seem to have sensitive lungs after some of the bad chemical exposures that I had.

Their point is to drive the ‘anti-vaxxer’ narrative and demonize those ‘deniers’ of “settled science”.

Sound familiar???

Nasty is an understatement. Some of the vacants they’d light up when I worked the ghetto were unbelievable. They shoot up in the vacants and shit in 5 gallon buckets. Then when another house became vacant they’d move to the cleaner one and torch the old one. Houses never sold there. People just walked away to get away.

Don’t know about you but I worry about my asbestos exposure. Time in the navy and power plants. I’ve had two people with similar histories that have died from asbestos exposure. Sorry about the lung issues. We did things that might have been bad but you have to make a living. A shot to help prevent disease is handy. Wish there was one for smoke and asbestos exposure. The exposure to diseases we had mostly gotten rid of are back with illegals and no one has really acknowledged it, to bad. Be safe.

“I care about the nearly million dollars it cost to save this kid..my tax dollars or my insurance rates paid for his ‘freedom’”

Some might say the same about the more than 4 billion paid by the government to compensate for vaccine injuries and death.

Does the misuse of tax dollars justify depriving people of their rights? I can remember a time when there were no collectivists on this forum. Now we’ve got loads that must think it was Reagan who coined the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child.”

There are many people who choose not to be vaccinated or not to get all recommended vaccinations for various reasons. Stories like this are just as rare as those who have been harmed by vaccines as supported by evidence.

The issue is more about rights. Who gets to decide which vaccinations are recommended or mandated?

Would you agree to be vaccinated for AIDS, Ebola, or cholera if these vaccines were put on the recommended list?

Why should someone compromise his or her immune system to protect against AIDS if he or she does not share needles or engage in sodomy?

Why should someone get vaccinated for cholera when sanitation is much more effective and safe?

Why should someone be vaccinated for Ebola if the likelihood of being exposed to this disease is nearly zero?

Vaccines have saved millions of lives and are very beneficial in general. But there are clearly people who are just pushing vaccines as a way to line their pockets. Not all vaccines are safe or effective. Many are not worth the risk of possible side effects.

“Abort the parents, save the kid.”

Anyone who advocates killing parents for opposing vaccinations does not belong on a conservative forum. They should team up with the totalitarians in the Democrat party, their natural home.

Wow! Whose making you get vaccinated for cholera, Ebola, or anything you object too? Only time I got shots that were forced on me was in the military. They did what was needed to survive in country. You should think about what diseases you’ll be exposed to and decide accordingly. Just asking.

“Whose making you get vaccinated for cholera, Ebola, or anything you object too? Only time I got shots that were forced on me was in the military.”

Most mandatory vaccines are “forced” or coerced by making them mandatory to attend school.

Our “conservative” governor in Texas, Rick Perry, was down for mandatory HPV vaccines for ALL preteen girls because the vaccine makers were sending money his way. But there was a backlash and he backed off.

The issue is we are responsible for our own medical decisions and those for our children. The role of doctors is to inform, not decide. And it is definitely not the government’s job to decide.

“You should think about what diseases you’ll be exposed to and decide accordingly.”

Exactly. Informed consent. For every vaccination recommended one should way the risks and benefits.

Don’t know about you but I worry about my asbestos exposure,

If you are not having problems I wouldn't worry about it. Asbestos is not really that much worse than exposure to other types of dust. Any type of dust is bad for people. There is a very strong correlation between smoking and people who have serious problems with asbestos or other dusts. I did a lot of sandblasting with normal sand before I joined the fire department. Silicosis is every bit as serious as Asbestosis... there are not the deep pockets associated so it doesn't get hyped. You can get silicosis just by living in a very dusty area with sandy soils.

During the drought that caused the dust bowl thousands of people died from exposure to dust. When I was kid we used to burrow around in the loose grass hay in the barn and cough up all sorts of dirt.

I have been around asbestos quite a bit as well, but I do not believe that either the sandblasting or working around asbestos is the cause of my sensitive lungs. It could be heredity and chemical exposures may also have been a factor.

True. But Ron and Brian worked areas like me an both are in the ground. It’s just a gives me pause sometimes. In the old days we really didn’t know the risks, and were young enough to not pay attention.

Do those subjecting themselves to contemporary aggressive vaccination schedules deserve the karma they get? Does Hannah Poling deserve a lifetime of pain and suffering because her family trusted our pharmaceutical companies, lobbyists, FDA, congressman, and doctors?

I think not.

Family to Receive $1.5M+ in First-Ever Vaccine-Autism Court Award
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/family-to-receive-15m-plus-in-first-ever-vaccine-autism-court-award/

$1.5 million dollars for her life care; lost earnings; and pain and suffering for the first year alone. In addition to the first year, the family will receive more than $500,000 per year to pay for Hannah's care. ...

Then, in July 2000, she was vaccinated against nine diseases in one doctor's visit: measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and Haemophilus influenzae. ...

Afterward, her health declined rapidly. She developed high fevers, stopped eating, didn't respond when spoken to, began showing signs of autism, and began having screaming fits. In 2002, Hannah's parents filed an autism claim in federal vaccine court. Five years later, the government settled the case before trial and had it sealed.

Many feel it is tantamount to child abuse to pump 9 antigens into a child's immature immune system (along with preservatives and foreign fetal cells) and induce a cytokine storm that irreversibly damages a child like this. The family trusted and presented their daughter for the needle, a decision they will forever regret. Please don't be quick to judge those who no longer trust that our corporations and government agencies have our best interests at heart.
