A new case report from the Centers for Disease Control released Thursday starkly highlights the costs of not vaccinating children. It details an unvaccinated 6-year-old boys encounter with tetanusand the hugely expensive, two-month-long effort it took to save his life.
Tetanus is caused by the namesake bacteria Clostridium tetani. More accurately, its what happens when the soil-loving C. tetani gets into your bodyusually through an open cutand spews out an extremely potent toxin. This toxin can quickly paralyze and send your muscles into constant spasms, beginning with the jaw (if you know anything about tetanus, its probably that it causes lockjaw). These spasms can then spread to the chest, back, and gut, leading to painful fractures, problems breathing, and even the complete loss of bowel control. Its a brutal disease, one that can take months to fully recover from. Even with treatment, 10 percent of victims ultimately die.
Thankfully, weve had a working vaccine for tetanus since the 1920s, and vaccination has virtually eliminated the disease in countries with decent healthcare. Most every person in the U.S. is fully vaccinated for tetanus by the time they enter school, with the first of five shots happening at the age of 2 months (booster shots every 10 years afterward are recommended). Unfortunately, that wasnt the case for the unnamed child in this report, since his family had chosen to not vaccinate him for any condition.
According to the authors, the 6-year-old boy from Oregon had gotten a forehead scrape while playing outside on a farm sometime in 2017. The wound was cleaned and sutured at home, but six days later the boy began experiencing lockjaw and muscle spasms. He then started arching his back and neck involuntarily and eventually could barely breathe, prompting his family to call for help.

“Its the illegals bringing in the diseases”
OK...and put on your thinking cap. Why do you think all these illegals have diseases that were eradicated here decades ago?
I know it’s a tough one, take your time.
For extra credit, explain why Americans pretty much were rid of those diseases that the illegals are bringing in.
HaHaHaHa.....
“Most of the time tetanus is not considered a risk for a scrape.”
A “scrape” that mom had to suture. The lockjaw tetanus came from the Dr Quinn wannabe and her unsanitary stitching.
My over seas duties were accompanied by shots before deployment. Military requirements. I was vaccinated for polio, small pox, and tetnus as a child. There may be problems with vaccines, I cant testify to that. The shots have worked for me so far. Just saying.
One reason for this is because they changed adjuvants to reduce or remove aluminum and mercury in response to the anti-vaxxer fear-claims. This makes for a weaker immune response, hence more doses.
Children have to get more doses than adults because they have young untrained immune systems with shorter immune “memory”.
Funny you wrote that. I can remember going through the line getting needles in both arms simultaneously in the military. Today, I stay up on my tetanus shot because I’m always around dirty/rusty steel, metal, nails and lots of other hazards. The flu shot though I don’t get. I don’t get out in public too much. I have more than a few things to do around here, my other house and acreage.
Not sure of your facts..vague reference
In the old days, yes, people were vaccinated for tetanus right after stepping on a rusty nail, for example. Growing up, we all heard about that danger.
Now, without even stepping on a rusty nail, children are vaccinated for tetanus five times from infancy.
This boy reportedly had one tetanus shot before he was scraped up. Then, he was scraped up, and he contracted tetanus and was given a second shot in the hospital (as per the comments section). The commenters are criticizing the fact that he didn’t receive five shots before ever getting scraped up.
In other words, these days, your parents and mine would’ve been criticized for not getting us five tetanus shots long before we ever stepped on a rusty nail. That’s where it is today.
let parents decide. Vaccinations are shown to cause autism. It is not worth the risk.
I care about the nearly million dollars it cost to save this kid..my tax dollars or my insurance rates paid for his “freedom”
But they dont....WE end up with karmic bill.
” and was given a second shot in the hospital”
He wasn’t hospitalized until after the tetanus was running wild. The shot isn’t a cure at that point.
Your tag line...that’s the point of vacinnes...so my tax dollars don’t end up paying for some anti vacinnes child getting saved.
Yep. Been there did that in the line. Im like you, I got a few acres, horses and a mule along with barb wire. Welding and maintence on equipment and gardening in the dirt. I avoid the flu shots, Im not convinced the advocates for those know which strain we are dodging. I got no doubts about tetanus. My wife and I raised two kids. They got their shots and we spent a lot of time home doctoring. Raise kids youll learn First Aide.
That has been totally debunked by research...but why look at facts when Google and Facebook have all the information you need
You seem to be willfully misunderstanding the sequence of events. The kid did not get a tetanus shot immediately after his injury and was actually “stitched up” by a parent. Your parents and mine would have been criticized for not getting us a tetanus shot immediately after the injury especially when the child had not been getting his recommended boosters. Waiting until tetanus sets in before getting the shot is obviously ineffective. If a doctor or nurse made this kind of decision they would lose their license and be sued into oblivion. The parents were negligent, but parents are allowed to make stupid decisions in our society.
Think about this, the company I worked for required I get a physical every two years. I went to one and the nurse asked me when did you get your last tetanus shot? I said beats me. She asked if I wanted one? I stick myself with fish hooks, stab myself with old barb wire, and etc sometimes so I said yeah. She whips out a syringe from her pocket and gives me a booster shot. Said I needed one every 7 to 10 years. I was around 40 years old back then. She had 4 or 5 of those shots in her pocket. I always thought that was funny. Dad was as bad about it as her.
