SALT LAKE CITY, Utah A Utah couple said they're in love, but they're first cousins and it's illegal for them to marry in their home state.
Michael Lee and his wife Angie tied the knot in Colorado where it is legal to marry.
The couple said their love story began with a crush in second grade.
"It's like second grade ,I remember, I stopped her mother-- I stopped her-- I said I'm going to marry Angie, and she said 'no I'm sorry you can't but you can be friends,'" Lee told KTVX.
Family vacations would bring the two together, but social norms would draw them apart again.
Michael said, "Life was unfair. Like why did the person I want to be with the most ... Why did you have to be my cousin?"
The couple reunited after 10 years this winter. They both recently became single and were ready to take the plunge.
"We're like, okay this is crazy, but we're adults now, we're single now, we're just going to go for it... who cares what our family thinks," Angie said.

DANG!
They might have more luck in AR, KY, TN, or WV
i knew a couple like this- they lived together, (unmarried) and decided not to have any kids. They did not grow up together , like the couple in the article.
It was quite common in the Old Testament and amongst the royals.
They actually married in Colorado.
Indeed, Genesis has cousins marrying each other all over the place.
See, they get rid of Tancredo and look what happens.
They might have more luck in AR, KY, TN, or WV
Or any of the “stans.”
Maybe their kid will learn to play the banjo.
If a congresswoman can marry her brother.............
“...as soon as they crossed over the state border into Utah they’re not married anymore.”
A State doesn’t have to recognize a marriage conducted under the law of another State?
Does the same hold for divorce?
How does this work under Federal law, for income tax dependent purposes and survivor benefits and so forth?
Last time I checked, 1st cousins can marry in 26 states. The only restriction is that double first cousins can’t marry, because they are genetically like brothers and sisters.
It seems to me that it would be 50%.
I had a first cousin who was hot as they come. I had a real crush on her but never even thought about letting it go further as it would have been impossible.
FUNNY STORY: a delightful couple up the street from us had been married for a few years and the wife was going thru some old family pictures and her husband says, wait..Ive seen that picture somewhere. Turns out they shared some great grandparents or something. :)
Doesn’t every state have to honor other state’s marriages?
My wife and I were married in a state where it was legal for us to get married at our age, but then moved to a state where we would not have been able to be married at our age.
But we were still legally married there.
Plus the difference between 3-4% and 4-7% chance of a genetic disorder is not a hell of a lot.
WOOOOO!!!
Roll Tide!
Their offspring.................
There is a good reason, based on genetics, why close relatives do not marry for the purposes of reproduction. Any undesirable genetic traits are uncommonly concentrated, leading to congenital defects that may or may not show up.
This is known as a purebred line, which concentrates a number of other traits as well, not all bad, most are benign, and some very few, are actually a source of superior adaptation to what may be specific environmental conditions. Those that cannot adapt die. Those that become too adapted to one set of conditions may not easily be transferred to another environment.
Abraham and Sarah were half brother/sister..................
