A hot US job market is coaxing people in from the sidelines
Associated Press ^ | March 7, 2019 | Christopher Rugaber

A surprisingly strong burst of job growth over the past year has led many economists to wonder: Where are all the workers coming from?

As recently as last spring, analysts had worried that hiring would slow as the pool of unemployed shrank. Many employers have complained for years that they could no longer find enough people to fill their open jobs.

Turns out they were both wrong.

The pace of hiring in 2018 was the most robust in three years, and for a surprising reason: Many more people have decided to look for work than experts had expected. The influx of those job seekers, if sustained, could help extend an economic expansion that is already the second-longest on record.

The growth in America’s workforce — made up of people either working or looking for work — has helped reverse an alarming consequence of the recession: The exit of millions of Americans from the job market. …

As Pelosi would have put it, Obama freed them from “job lock”. Remember that phrase?

Yup :-) , and people ate it up.

The Clinton Administration has been termed, “ America’s holiday from history “

I think the Obama/Pelosi/Reid years are best described as America’s holiday from reality

We don’t need more anti-American invaders, legal or illegal.

A gut level response and I understand that.

But put your thinking cap on. We can’t stop immigration nor do we want to. What we want is common sense immigration laws that are followed. We used to have these laws. Right now we have no laws. Trumps wants congress to pass laws so that he can follow them. He is trying to put the issue back to the people, US, in the election. So we will have to get involved. But managing for what you don’t want doesn’t take you anywhere.

A few further thoughts:

1) there is no perfect solution. Read that slowly and let your lips move.

2) The ONE UNIQUE quality about our country has been the ability to move up and down the social/financial ladder. Note I use the word “has been”, it is still possible but harder and harder all the time.

3) We should obviously discriminate on crime, health, and ability to work and country of origan. These were the old laws we operated under.

4) My great grandparents probably didn’t look too pretty getting off the boat, but they had sponsors and there was no govt welfare.

5) A bit of history. The Supreme Court ruled in about 1870 that immigration was a federal prerogative not state. It took about 30 years before our legislatures completed the legislation, they didn’t rush into it and it worked well for many years. We don’t want an efficient government.

And what were the welfare policies of those countries when Adam was with us?

With your point, we really have to allow unlimited migration, because, well, companies need to benefit from the cheapest labor.

Now, we have an idiot president saying we need H-1Bs and (worse) H-2Bs and H-2As needed to keep the country going.

You missed the point and assumed it was one or the other. I never said that.

My point is that the more we micro manage this, we do as much harm as good. If we allow the free market to work, it will arrive at a better solution than govt.

Even Adam Smith allowed there was a need for some government and even a few lawyers. The discussion was how much.

My issue is that the solution to all problems is more laws, whether liberal or conservative. Can we at lease consider human nature and the Invisible Hand?

If the opening sentence is true, it is a scathing damning indictment of “many economists” who probably think of themselves as competent. The widespread eased allowing of “disability” ratings during the prolonged recession was a manifestly transparent tactic to reduce the unemployment numbers. It had been used in various Euro countries during the 90’s when needed, and was obvious to the casual observer here after 2009’s “green shoots” turned brown.

That and they claimed people out of work for over a year had simply “given up” and therefore did not count as unemployed. Oh they never bothered asking these people if they gave up. They just assumed that so they could deny how bad the real unemployment rate actually was.

The whole notion that an educated or trained person would forever more be economically useless because they weren’t employed for a year or two or three in the midst of the worst economy since the Great Depression was always ridiculous. As if they suddenly forgot all their job skills.....or as if jobs suddenly got completely different within a few years. Of course these people can be put back to work. Trump has done it.

But how much do we interfere with free markets? Again, it is not all free markets or all controlled.

We certainly interfere enough to preserve a stable middle class - no country without one is thriving.

We can’t stop immigration

In the same sense that we can't stop murder, perhaps; what of it?

nor do we want to.

After decades of mass legal immigration and several tens of millions of immigrants, I think we do want to.

The ONE UNIQUE quality about our country has been the ability to move up and down the social/financial ladder.

Which has nothing to do with letting new people on the ladder (i.e., immigration).

There is no “free market” anywhere. No two countries have that. Even Singapore has a small tariff. Every country blocks trade in many ways.

Tariffs are simply taxes. Taxes are penalties. It is far worse to penalize reportable income than products and services that came from elsewhere and whose manufacture contributed nothing to your economy through taxes or employment. The local stuff is already loaded down with penalties.

Which brings us back to H1-Bs and their supposed “need.” As countries are first to be accountable to their citizens, any allowance of something from outside must be weighed against benefit for that sovereign country.

As I am a promoter of free trade, I believe people should be allowed to hire foreigners and buy foreign products. However, there should be a bar to jump to do so. That bar should be financial and merit-based.

We have large companies that hire and hold H1-Bs as “consultants,” which get paid quite a bit less than the prevailing wage. There is an “indentured servant” situation with all H1-Bs, which is a moral issue of its own. As companies claim they can’t find any talent in the US, that must logically equate to an extremely high rate of pay to the foreign worker, or it was really a lie and the worker was only hired because she was much cheaper than US workers.

How can the Invisible Hand work in a sovereign country if we do not allow citizens to become capable of meeting the growing demand of its companies? How do we grow our populous into what we need when we hire from elsewhere for less than those talents cost here? There can be no supply of talent to demand for talent when companies sabotage the incentive to learn a profitable trade or talent!

Sir, the Invisible Hand was broken first by hiring and buying from outside our borders. If the labor and materials markets were allowed to adjust as they once did, we’d see the Invisible Hand having worked quite nicely.
