University of Mississippi student government groups are calling for a Confederate soldier monument to be moved from a prominent spot on the Oxford campus to a Confederate cemetery in a secluded area behind a coliseum.
All 47 members of the Associated Student Body Senate voted unanimously on Tuesday in favor of a resolution asking administrators to move the statue, which has stood since 1906 in a park-like setting near the university's main administrative building.
The Confederate soldier statue was a rallying point in Oxford in 1962 for people who rioted to oppose court-ordered integration of the university.
The Graduate Student Council Senate adopted a similar resolution on Monday.

They’re the landsharks now.
no lie.
“All 47 members of the Associated Student Body Senate voted,,,”
Fake headline.
Indoctrinated fools.
When they finally get what they want, they’re going to be surprised.
I grew up just a few miles from there.
Times sure have changed since the 50’s and 60’s...................
I know the defense likes the call themselves the Landsharks and the players imitate a fin on the top of their helmet when they make a play.
At least some got to vote on it the measure, the statue wasn’s ripped down by a mob, and it’s going to be moved, not destroyed.
The University of Mississippi was founded in 1844 for and by slave owners, segregationists and white bigots.
The wisest course of action here would be to burn the entire thing down. Nuke it from orbit, as it were.
Because racism.
Democrats started the civil war, democrats passed Jim Crow laws...50 years later democrats put up statues of civil war soldiers throughout the south, democrats opposed the civil rights act, now democrats want to erase that history, and act like it never happened.
It’s official, the student body voted on it.
Because apparently all the good mascot names were taken. Or something.
Virtue signaling?
Wanting to show they are liberal and politically correct?
We all know what the politically correct view of various issues will be. On this one, the PC view is to tear down statues.
In the social/political environment today, could it be that they were afraid of being called racist and bigots if they wanted to keep the statue? The path of least resistance is to agree with the PC view and vote to remove the statue.
47-0 sounds like a vote from the old Soviet Union.
To build a glorious future first destroy the past.
The students will regret moving the statue when they see a 20-foot-high Trump statue take its place.
“the statue wasns ripped down by a mob, and its going to be moved, not destroyed.”
Moved to a Confederate cemetery. That seems to be about the most dignified and respectful disposition.
Civil Wars, and wars where significant war crimes or human rights violation occur, take a lot longer to lay to rest. Survivors remain for about 80 years, and significant animosity can be passed on to children, and even grand children.
To some degree, this may also be an indicator of turning a corner on the post-war reconciliation.
But the adults at the university are saying Sit down, shut up and do your homework - right? Right?
Maybe they should have a ceremony to burn all of the Library books that reference the Civil War. It’d garner headlines!
Unanimous shows how unrepresentative they are of the student body as a whole too.
