Oh dear. I'd placed an online pickup order through GrubHub for El Charro Mexican restaurant at 933 Fairlawn Ave in Laurel, MD. When I arrived, apparently no one at the place spoke English. The nice lady who greeted me smiled, picked up a menu, and proceeded to take me to a booth. I said "No, online order for pickup".
"OK" she smiled and pointed to the booth, as if to ask me whether this we a good spot. I said again, "Online order for pickup". She repeated the "OK" and placed the menu on the booth's table. I realized I wasn't getting anywhere with her, and I then spied a little sign on the bar that said "Online Order - pick up here." I picked up the sign and waved it.
She looked confused, and rushed to the kitchen. Another lady came out, grabbed a menu, and pointed to a table. I again waved the little sign. This one frowned, said "OK", and disappeared into the kitchen. She returned with a plastic bag, hopefully containing my order.
I said "Thank you" and left. As luck would have it, when I got back to my car and opened the package it was indeed my order.
Last time I order from them...
‘No se habla ingles, gringo!’
Voting with your wallet is the best recommendation. Stop supporting companies that are clearly hiring illegal alians.

I strongly suggest learning Spanish. In the very near future, there will be LOTS more of this type of thing.
Our government has decided Americans aren’t worth protecting, security wise, or culturally. And a huge number of indoctrinated Americans agree with the government.
Just talk louder...
Was the food good? Was the price reasonable?
If the answers to both are “yes”, then next time walk right up to the “Online Order - pick up here.” sign.
That’s what I would do. Your mileage may vary.
Agreed. Any Maryland Freepers that know this place in Laurel, stay away!
here in L.A., it’s the same sh*t. Even my Filipino bud is pissed bec. they talk TO him in spanish. One time he went ballistic and just said “I dont speak spic’.
> Does anyone here speak English? <
That alone does not worry me much. Because a similar situation occurred back in the early 1900’s during the last great wave of (legal) immigrants from Europe.
Now here’s what worries me, a lot. Those early immigrants were pretty much forced to learn English. But not today. I recently received a short notice from my health insurance company. It was printed in ten different languages! That’s crazy, and harmful to the country.
It was pretty good.
But like joma89 said, I’ll not order from them again.
Its been happening for many years. My first similar experience was about 20 years ago in seattle. I had some alien of unknown status as a limo driver. He spoke only russian. He was supposed to take me to the ferry terminal. He agreed several times. Eventually we are nearing the airport and he’s asking me what airline. He needed to call his home office to get directions while he parked in the right lane of a freeway. Nearly missed the ferry inspite of purposely leaving early.
Just say ICE - they’ll understand.
I had the same experience, no English speakers when I went. Try Tampico a few blocks north, a bit of a dive next to a hotel, but my favorite in the area. It is more Tex-Mex than Salvadorian.
Stick with Grilled Cheese sandwich.
That restaurant should not be listed on Grubhub.
If they want to be listed now, then leave a note that most of the staff is not bilingual. Otherwise, it leads to annoyed customer experiences like yours. Time wasted.
They are not ready for the general public.
I’ve had similar experiences for home delivery with Chinese food places. I say DO NOT SEND Chopsticks, soy sauce packets, plastic forks or Fortune Cookies. They send all these things anyway. No one is reading the Special Notes. Many service workers operate ‘on automatic’.
This from a guy apparently conversant on COBOL2 and Java.
Press 1 Spanish, press 2 for eubonics. ....press 907 for English. ..
Agreed. GrubHub sends out an email afterwards asking you to rate the experience. I will let them know for sure!
In Maryland, wow.
En Florida, dos linguas es muy importante.
Just walk into a Taco Bell in Hialeah...
