An Alabama fan who poisoned Toomer’s Oak Trees at Auburn University opened up about why he did it, saying he just doesn't like the Crimson Tide's biggest rival.
Harvey Updyke, Jr. poisoned the 80-year-old trees in 2011 and was eventually busted after he called into the Paul Finebaum radio show admitting the crime. He also left a phone message to an Auburn professor saying he knew who poisoned the tree.
Updyke Jr. pleaded guilty to a Class C felony of criminal damage of an agricultural facility, was ordered to serve at least six months in jail, spend five years on supervised probation and ordered to pay $800,000 in restitution.

He is so stupid he had brag about his stupid actions. And in bragging he got caught.
Why is it that so many petty criminals feel the need to brag about their crimes?

I have always liked Alabama, Auburn, Florida and FSU. Probably Florida above all mainly because my high school sent quite a few players to the Gators.
I now always pull for Oklahoma State to beat the Sooners.

I will say the most bitter rivalry I have seen is South Carolina/Clemson.
I once had two bosses. One a S.C. grad the other, Clemson. Their whole life seemed to be about the rivalry.

Trees don’t play football. The trees didn’t do anything to him. Lock him up for the rest of his sorry life.
My theory is that the crime is the adrenalin rush; brief and intense.
The bragging is remembering the act and pleasuring in reliving it in telling the tale. “This is how I stuck it to the Crimson Tide”
Kind of like how Beo Wulf retells the story of how he defeated Grendel.
But I doubt that the Toomer’s Oak Trees gave him much of a fight.
