Captain Marvel MCU Future In Doubt; Avengers Cast Unhappy
Comic Book News ^ | March 5, 2019 | Matt McGloin

Posted on 03/07/2019 8:05:24 AM PST by C19fan

A new rumor has landed online that echoes my own concerns about the Captain Marvel movie and Brie Larson, but this is claimed to be coming from on top -- as high as Disney CEO Bob Iger.

The rumor claims that the Avengers cast, or certain members of the Avengers cast, is unhappy with Brie Larson being the face of the MCU going forward. It's said one particular actress - hinted at it being Elizabeth Olsen - feels that they are getting pushed aside, that they are getting treated differently.

The Last Jedi made money, but the backlash was real.

Only in butthurt fanboys who are mad that a movie starred an icky girl.

I just want to tick off a few counterpoints about this article. I am surprised there is a healthy anti Captain Marvel movement out there. However, I will be shocked if this movie bombs because there is such an incredible build-up with Infinity Wars and her planned role in finishing that story. Next, brie Larson is a leftist jerk - and so is every single one of the Marvel actors except for Chris Pratt. However, Brie Larson is a gorgeous young woman. I have been enjoying these articles attacking Marvel’s plans for a more liberal story line. However, despite the claims this guy keeps making and despite the fact that I despised The Last Jedi, that movie made an absolute fortune and it is not clear that it was the cause for the failure of Solo. However, I will note that the emergence of a gay Sulu along with a lousy script destroyed the Ztar Trek reboot, and that series may be finished even though they had the great prospect of a movie with Chris Hemsworth and the new Kirk. All of these actors are liberals. If you look at Black Panther, it had some pretty despicable references to black people being oppressed in the United States but that movie was also incredibly successful. I enjoyed it myself despite cringing at that nonsense. So we will see.

Whatever dude. I get it, everyone who doesn’t love new Star Wars is a misogynistic troglodyte. I read it in all the papers and all over twitter, now I get to read it here too.

Captain Marvel will not bomb. The only question is whether it does Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man box office, or whether it does Black Panther box office.

How did that last one do?

Also, to address your point, I paraphrase Adam Smith to say

"Be assured young friend, that there is a great deal of ruin in a fan base."

Star Wars kept F***ing with their fans, and I think perhaps now the fans have had enough. I know this one has, and unless something changes drastically, I will never pay to watch any more movies in the Star Wars Universe, and I am starting to feel the same way about the Marvel Universe.

I am certainly not going to pay to see Captain Nasty bitch, and I very much doubt I will ever even watch it for free at some point in the future.

This character cannot be murdered quickly enough to suit me. Vile, hate-filled nasty bitch needs to go.

“It’s like Kevin Feige is telling his MCU fans to accept Brie Larson and Captain Marvel — or else.”

I gladly accept “or else”.

Now, back to my “Gunsmoke” reruns...

Half the old cast is done anyway. And all the indications are Endgame sets them up for a retcon to slide in new versions of the characters (not just new actors but new back stories). Retcons are part of the Marvel way, that’s how Peter Parker stayed in high school for over a decade, Marvel moves forward the beginning of the story.

Because the 14 year old young male demographic which is the primary target audience of movie makers easily identify with some arrogant condescending female bitch-warrior beating men up.

Seems like they forgot the first rule of escapism. People want to imagine themselves as the hero, and if your hero is the antithesis of your audience, you must tread very carefully to get your audience to care about your "hero."

The problems is this character is a forced character not only in the MCU, but in Marvel’s comic universe as well... They keep trying to push her on the public, and the public, for the most part just ain’t buying it.

The character has ZERO depth, and is just another SJW, angry at the world, nothing....

There are far better female characters in Marvel and DC Universe than this one.. the public keeps rejecting her, but they just keep pushing her...

I am sure her movie will do fine, because its part of the larger MCU, but personally I know NO ONE, itching to see this movie... most will just because its part of the larger story, but this character is just a dud.

I haven't seen the movie, and I likely will never see the movie, but reading reviews, it's more than just an "icky girl."

From what I have read, all men are portrayed as incompetent idiots and cowards, and all women are powerful, brave and brilliant, even though the stupid plans the women come up with virtually destroy the entire rebel alliance.

Also the business of using a hyper-drive capable ship to utterly destroy a super massive military warship pretty much undoes virtually every story line since Star Wars began.

Any Hyperdrive ship can destroy a "Star destroyer"? Well H3ll, we'll just make hyperdrive torpedoes out of randomly collected junk freighter engines, and wipe out the Empire!

Idiot woman director and idiot women writing staff are too incompetent to have been given a project like Star Wars. They mucked up worse than George Lucas, and he did some pretty serious mucking up himself.

I am more interested to see how Shazam! does than this movie...

Shazam, if handled right, could catch far more fire than anyone expects.... It doesn’t have the MCU push around it to prop it up, but the character is a teenage boy who winds up with super powers....

It will be interesting to see if the teenage and younger demographic shows up for it. If it catches, it will catch bigger than anyone predicts, because, what kid doesn’t fantasize about this?

Its a lesser character in the DC universe, and DC is notoriously bad at taking its characters from comic books to film... But if there was a movie that I would think may surprise at the box office, Shazam would be the one I would think would be more likely to surprise.

No it will never pull in the numbers of the Captain Marvel, as its not part of some decade long intertwined storyline.. but if it catches, I suspect it is fare more likely to exceed expectations that Captain Marvel will.

Honestly I expect Captain Marvel to do fine, but underperform expectations.

“So I don’t really understand the notion that existing actors feel that they are being “pushed aside”.”

Well, especially considering that the woman complaining was cast as a relatively minor character herself, so she never would be getting her own solo movie or anything like that.

Scarlet Witch was never a top tier character, and never really had her own solo comic book either. I think the best she ever did was being like second-in-command of the “West Coast Avengers”, which is like being the assistant coach of the triple-A team. Then in the movies, they killed off her brother in the first movie they appeared in, and killed off her husband in the last movie, so she doesn’t even have any supporting characters that might have helped build some story about her.

There’s nothing actually new about this Captain Marvel. Marvel, through very strange stuff, got access to the name but not the character. Since the 60s their Captain Marvel has had nothing to do with Shazam or Billy Batson. And their Captain Marvel has been a woman three times, Carol Danvers (the character being used in the movie) switch from Ms Marvel to Captain Marvel 7 years ago.

The original Superman movie was a success. Christopher Reeve played a wholesome, upbeat hero that believed in Truth, Justice and the American way.

People loved that. They loved a hero that made them feel good. The Superman reboots attempted to capture the darkness that was the successful Batman reboot staring Michael Keaton.

Problem was, the public didn't like a dark, brooding narcissistic, fatalistic Superman who thought about suicide. Nobody wants other people's drama. The old adage, "Laugh, and the whole world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone", applies here.

The DC people seem to be stuck on "dark", and cannot seem to think "Happy" or "Light".

I think you may be right about Shazam, because I expect Shazam to be happy and light, rather than dark and brooding. Maybe they will get this one right.

It won’t do Black Panther box office, it will do fine financially, but I expect it to underperform expectations.

As I stated elsewhere, I know of NOBODY excited about this film... no one... a lot will go see it because it is part of the larger multi year MCU story line... as the character is obviously going to play a big roll in the next avengers movie...

However, the character itself is weak, just a angry SJW, caricature with no dept... (I am not talking about the movie here, I am talking about the existing Comic Book Character they are basing the movie from)... Marvel keeps pushing her as Marvel’s “superman”, and the public keeps rejecting it... but they still keep pushing it.

If there is a movie that might surprise, and exceed expectations, I would say Shazam! could do that, if it catches.... Captain Marvel? Not so much.. Will do plenty of business, but the attempt to argue Captain Marvel, is some sort of social moment, like Disney conned AA’s into thinking Black Panther was... ain’t working... so don’t expect it to do BP business.... It will do fine financially, but I would bet it will not meet internal Disney expectations if I had to put a bet on it.

I’m not sure I believe those official “Black Panther” numbers anyways. Hollywood accounting is a load of crap, and they make numbers say what they want them to say.

As someone who has been reading DC for almost 40 years now... Yes I still do read a few titles... The problem with DC is they just don’t respect the source material.

The original Superman Movie, holds up well to this day (other than the cornball ending), because it respected the source material.

The Batman Reboots that started the modern DC movie ERA largely respected the source material....

Wonder Woman, for the most part, respected the source material.

Everything else? Not so much, and that is why nearly everything else has been a dog.

The reason I think Shazam! may stick, is the fact it plays to every child’s fantasy.. Here you have some nobody kid, who suddenly has super powers. What child, or boy anyway, didn’t have that fantasy at one point or another... and here you have a story that plays right to that.

Hopefully their attempts to make it “contemporary” won’t ruin it, and let it just be a fun enjoyable ride of good vs evil.

If they do that, it could catch and surprise.

Not too strange - the owners of the copyright(/trademark/whatever) for the original Captain Marvel allowed it to expire.
