MELBOURNE, Australia — A man admitted in an Australian court on Monday that he choked an Airbnb guest to death over an unpaid 210 Australian dollar ($149) bill.

Jason Colton pleaded not guilty to murder in the Victoria state Supreme Court but admitted to manslaughter in Ramis Jonuzi’s death in 2017.

Colton would face a possible life sentence if a jury convicts him of murder. He would face up to 20 years in prison if the jury accepts the death was manslaughter.

Prosecutors told the jury that Colton knew his actions were likely to kill or seriously injure Jonuzi.

Jonuzi had been subletting a room in a Melbourne home from Colton, who was also a tenant.

Oh, c'mon, crushing his neck and beating him unconscious... How could he know?

Seems like harsh penalty for nonpayment. Wonder if under Aus law the perp can sue the dead person’s estate for the dough?

If Australian schools have been dumbed down as much as US schools, anything is possible.

“Your Honor, I was just trying to get his attention. How was I to know it might kill him?”

Yeah, also known as a choke hold. If he knew how to put a choke hold on someone, then he probably knew it could kill very quickly and unexpectedly. Any kind of legit instruction stresses that.

The penalty for theft biblically is restitution (up to four times). Never death.

Don’t know about Australia, but in the U.K., you CAN’T kick out a tennant. You have to go to court. And even then, you may have to pay bailiffs to get him out. You cannot even remove his stuff.

I bet the renter never skips out on the payment again. I’m guessing he learned his lesson...
