FDA approves ketamine-like nasal spray for depression

Spravato is a nasal spray administered by an approved health care provider in a doctor's office or a medical clinic. It may also be self-administered but only under the supervision of a care provider and cannot be taken home.

"Because of [safety] concerns, the drug will only be available through a restricted distribution system and it must be administered in a certified medical office where the health care provider can monitor the patient," Farchione said.

Depending on the severity of the patient's depression, it is given either once a week or once every other week. n.

The drug is rapidly acting, so it starts working faster than other antidepressants, according to Janssen. It works by restoring brain cells in patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Currently available treatments for major depression are ineffective in 30% to 40% of patients. According to the FDA, there is one other approved medication for treatment-resistant depression, Symbyax, which was approved in 2009.

Buy yours now! There might be a leftist run on the product on November 3, 2020...or at least I am hoping so!

(They will have to make a new product that prevents heads from exploding)

FDA takes years to approve it for safety, then demonizes the “evil rich” manufacturer when law suits start happening.

he best medicine for Depression is sunshine. In the winter, especially in the more northerly areas D3 supplements through the winter substitute for sunshine to a large extant. I have watched it work with unmmerous cases of one-time depressed states and with clinical and manic depression. The drugs do not fix depression. They even you out by cutting off the highs and lows and leave you without emotion.

I am bi-polar. I am fearful of a medication like this because of its potential for abuse...the reason for a nasal spray is so the meds get absorbed fast into the blood stream. most anti depression medication is done over weeks getting the medicative levels to avoid addiction and abuse. Some of the worst abusers of medication are mentally ill people. My concern is that within three to five years we find out that those prescribed the medication have started taking more and more of the meds to feel better, not realizing that they are chasing a buzz, not the relief from depression they originally started on the meds for.

Anything that is fast acting and used to treat depression has the potential to go out of control. the faster it works the more likely it will lead to adiction...This is just my nonmedical practitioner opinion

That assumes falsely that depression is a chemical imbalance. Shoving a chemical that masks the effects of depression into the body does not make a person not depressed.

Modern “psychiatry” is largely the prescribing of chemicals to mask the visible effects of disturbances in the mind. The disturbance is still there, but not noticeable, so everyone assumes the disturbance is gone.

No offense, but it’s obvious you have never had depression. Anti-depressants are not designed to fix depression. They’re designed to provide relief so the person has the energy and clarity to work on the issues that caused the depression.

I agree. I tend to get a bit mopey when you get into those week long sunless episodes where all you see is gray and drizzle.

That will get you onto a “mental issues” database somewhere, given how the government is trying to force hospitals to “share” data with them for the “common good”...

That aspect irritates me...we want the best for not only our veterans but our fellow citizens, but nobody feels safe giving information to healthcare workers. (Not because they are bad, but they may operate under mandates)

There are a lot of veterans who won’t seek help out of concern for their 2nd Amendment rights. That is just wrong.
