Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Wednesday defended President Trump's assessment that the situation at the southern border constitutes a national emergency, telling lawmakers that an extended influx in migrants could "overwhelm" the immigration system. Nielsen testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security that illegal immigration "is spiraling out of control and threatening public safety and national security." Democrats pressed her on whether the situation genuinely required Trump's emergency declaration, which the House voted to overturn last week. "Although we may disagree on solutions, I hope there can be a consensus that the current system isn’t working and that this is an emergency," Nielsen said in her opening statement.

Her statement is brilliant. She is taking the right tact and tone. The problem with this situation is Congress.

These are people CAUGHT. How many are NOT being caught along our 1,954 mile border with Mexico, and disappearing into the interior of this country? I estimate only 25% are caught, which makes the number of people invading this country at 2 million illegal aliens a year.

I had the privilege to work with her last year at the 9/11 Museum. She was on stage and interviewed by a NY Times reporter as part of a day long event. The reporter was outwardly annoyed with her from the start, yet she remained poised and articulate throughout. Kudos to her for being strong, smart and engaging.

Trump sends troops to the border on patrol. 1000 hum vees riding along the border. Everyone captured is deported immediately. No asylum. Classify them as enemy combatants.

But I’ve heard that troops to the border have no authority to detain, arrest or deport. Only the Border Patrol can do that.
Why not just lay down 10 rows of razor wire and have 1,000 hum vees patrol 24/7? If you cut through, you are printed and deported. No asylum .never.
She was great in her testimony today. She defended the president and all of his policies. When asked for memos, etc she told the Dems to eat feces.
