Police Leave Dead Homeless Man Sitting Upright on NYC Subway Platform During Rush Hour

A homeless man died while sitting on a New York City subway platform Tuesday morning in Midtown Manhattan, a police spokesman told Jalopnik. The body was left sitting up and partially covered with a sheet on the platform bench long enough for commuters to take photos.

The 62-year-old man was reported dead at around 9 a.m. this morning on a Subway platform at the Herald Square Subway station, according to police. The man’s body “showed no signs of trauma,” as reported by the New York Daily News.

An MTA spokesperson confirmed to Jalopnik that train service continued as scheduled while police handled the scene. The police did not request to stop train service.

The news of the death was spread around Twitter after KFCBarstool, also known as Kevin Clancy of Barstool Sports, tweeted a picture of the body covered by a white blanket with an unfortunate caption:

“The worst goddam city in the world,” Clancy said in a followup tweet.

The subtle tone of the article is disappointment since the authorities were supposed to freak out and shut down a major transportation artery, making for a juicy story, instead of calmly handling it so the death scene can be processed by a detective and coroner.

Imagine what they would have done to you if you had done the same thing...but since they’re special...never mind.

I work on Third Avenue, just a few blocks from Grand Central. Every morning on my way to the office, I see a homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk at the corner of 44th and Lexington. This has been going on for the past year. Not every day but definitely on most days - even on extremely cold mornings. People (including myself) just walk around him. The cops do nothing. I suppose I can’t blame the cops because I’m sure they have their hands tied. But one of these days, it’s going to be a corpse that I walk around.

The time it takes to identify him and then give him a citation for loitering is substantial.

This has been going on for the past year.

In downtown Chicago near the DuSable bridge on Michigan Ave I've seen a homeless man, fairly heavy-set. He must have serious diabetes, because he had an ulcer on his leg as wide as a grapefruit - and nearly as deep. With an open wound like that, and living on the street - how long can someone be expected to survive?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell the walking dead from the dead dead.

I think the government policy is to create conditions so that they die as soon as possible and so stop being a burden on society.

Any thoughts on what if the man had something contagious and all those people who got close enough to take pictures? It would be the perfect terrorist tool.

Since when did this site that claims to be a gathering place of both Christians and conservatives become a cesspool of humor over the death of a homeless person?

Whatever happened to the sanctity of life that we all supposedly subscribe to?

This homeless person had a family at one time and may even have been a military veteran.

And yet you joke about his death...........

I hate when people leave me sitting dead in a subway platform. The least they could do is put me on a train or take me up stairs and sit me on a park bench.
