‘Captain Marvel’ is an aimless superhero slog
NY Post ^ | March 5, 2019 | Johnny Oleksinski

The latest instance of Marvel Studios wringing out every last drop of ink they can is “Captain Marvel.” Never heard of her? That’s because this is the character’s first appearance in a major film. Plundering the vault for lesser-known creations has paid off for the Disney-owned company so far: “Black Panther” made over $1 billion and scored a Best Picture nomination.

“Captain Marvel,” on the other hand, made an Oscar winner best known for playing a captive mother take on a role she is 100-percent wrong for while attempting to sell Jude Law to us as an action star like he’s a Louis Vuitton bag on Canal Street.

Review: ‘Captain Marvel’ is a four-star spectacle, as Brie Larson’s hero conquers villains onscreen and online

It’s always tricky introducing a new character, especially the most powerful one in the Marvel Comics roster - and Boden and Fleck, and Larson, do it with high energy, good humor and intelligence.

But then you’d need someone who could write a screenplay, and others that could actually act.

Actually there are lots of good actors and talented screenwriters who would love to tell original stories. What you actually need is studio executives willing to take a chance on an investment of tens of millions of dollars, minimum, and audiences that will turn up for those movies. Good movies come out every year, but people don’t go see them in the theater. “I’ll wait until it’s on cable.” You know what movies people come to theaters in droves on opening weekend for? Big dumb super hero movies.

Politics aside, Captain Marvel has never been anything beyond a poor copy of Superman.

Marvel’s superheros were always interesting because they were, at their essence, very flawed human beings who happened to have extraordinary powers; powers which generally were as much of a curse as a blessing (e.g., the Hulk). And they generally used their human skills far more than their superpowers (e.g., Iron Man is really just a really smart, rich, guy).

Captain Marvel, in contrast, was just bleh.

I loved comic books growing up in Israel; loved the movies now.

This one looks meh, with meh politics added on.

I’ll skip.

When did Captain Marvel become female? I’m old enough to have the original comics, and Captain Marvel was a GUY.

Really tired of all the PC/SJW nonsense in movies. (Tough, independent girl of questionable sexual orientation who beats the bajeebus out of multiple big, muscular guys - all armed to the teeth). And playing No Doubt’s “I’m just a girl” during a fight scene? REALLY? Have they totally forgotten how to make movies? (Good story..good writing..good acting..good directing..lack of stupidity like “I’m just a girl” playing during a fight scene..)

Will definitely pass on this one. And still haven’t seen the latest Star Wars PC/SJW-laden tripe.

Same here - and I hope she doesn’t figure prominently in End Game, but I fear she will.

Ditto.

Happened to see a preview commercial of this film. Looks like a completely formulaic, paint-by-numbers “superhero” film.

We will see. Warner-DC has messed up C.C. Beck's Captain Marvel so much over the last 40 years (starting with not buying the NAME when it could have been gotten cheaply) that I am skeptical.

Carol Danvers appeared March 1968, became Ms Marvel January 1977 and Captain Marvel September 2012.

“Captain Marvel” looks to be feminist identity politics purporting to be a movie. That is yet to be known. Once it’s released, the audience will make its determination.

What is known is that its star, Brie Larson, publicly detests men...especially white men. And she can not keep her mouth shut. Now, I refuse to tolerate being lectured by a clueless entitled child.

So I will not see this movie in the theater, I will not buy the disc, I will not rent it, and I will not view it when it is offered without fee. That is what happens when spoiled children and their production company enablers turn entertainment into SJW propaganda.

Ya mean, like the last dozen or so superhero films?

Snarky, wisecracking superheroes overcome their differences to join together and a fight an army of CGI bad guys. And, there will be a big swirly CGI sky thingie, too.

Hard pass. I'll guess the above for the last Avengers movie, too. Will likely miss that as well.

“The good thing about YouTube is I can let the geeks go to the movie and then watch their videos about how this movie ties into Endgame.”

Absolutely! the tooob keeps nerd cred at least a little current... The youngsters tend to look at one funny after “...yeah, an acoustic coupler into a 300 baud modem to get bulletin board posts...”

Cheers!

“After nine months of working with Walsh, Larson was able to deadlift 215 pounds, do 10 pull-ups, hip thrust 400 pounds and perform most of her own stunts, including falls — a feat that made Walsh incredibly proud...

...“Pull-ups are my favorite. It’s the one exercise that people say, ‘I can’t do it.’ I file that away, and when [we’ve progressed enough,] I say, ‘All right, let’s do this.’ And when they are able to perform their first pull-up, that’s epic.”

It took Larson about three months to reach that milestone, which Walsh says was a turning point in their training.

https://nypost.com/2019/03/04/how-badass-brie-larson-buffed-up-for-captain-marvel/";

WOW! A superhero capable of doing 10 pull-ups! After only 9 months of professional training! Only 3 months of training before she could do one! Don’t you wish she could join the SEALS or the NFL?
