To All:

Hear (sic) is a link to EAR & HEARING, The Official Journal of the American Auditory Society.

It has a compilation of all recent studies on hearing and Auditory problems:

What?

I started getting severe tinnitus in my left ear about two years ago. About 10 years ago I was in a small private plane with a friend, and I adjusted my Bose noise-cancelling headset while he was on takeoff, and blew out my left ear.

The hearing eventually came back in my left ear, and was fine for years, but about two years ago I lost all high frequency hearing above 7K, and have a constant ringing in my ear.

The ringing has gotten worse now that we have adopted a Chihuahua puppy, and she just learned how to bark. It physically hurts my ear, so now I’ve taken to wearing a foam earplug in that ear.

I wish there was a cure for tinnitus, but I know that all of the ‘one simple tricks’ are snake oil.

Has anyone tried this? Did it work?

I haven't contacted my local VA yet, but I wonder if availability is based on the local office having trained staff? And if so, is the local staff required to take the training?
A few years ago, I contacted my VA regarding the Neuromonics Oasis device and they said they were under-staffed and couldn't have the time to send anyone to training. Morons.

Very interesting piece.I was just diagnosed as having moderate hearing loss by the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary,a very highly respected center for treatment of eye, ear, nose and throat disorders. The doctor recommended hearing aids but mentioned nothing about a remedy for the tinnitus.

If this treatment is effective I hope that vets who suffered ear and hearing damage due to service in the Middle East have full access to it.

This is interesting to me because I think I may finally be developing tinnitus almost 30 years after my Navy career of more than 5000 flight hours in and around big turbo-prop aircraft. Very mild at the moment, basically just white noise now. We’ll have to see (hear) as time goes by, I guess. Good to know there may be solutions out there.

Sometimes it gets so bad that I think my wife can hear it too.

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

My dad has tinnitus. He doesn’t care, says it’s just his sound, and hopes when he gets to the next world, it doesn’t annoy the other souls.

Thanks for posting this. I try to ignore the tinnitus as best as I can. So far it’s manageable unless I get a sinus infection.

I’ve been hearing a ticking sound kind of merged with the sound of cicadas since I was about 10 and it’s unbelievably irritating

Only thing that I have found that helps is if I am not in conversation with people around me or on phone or in meetings I have music on loud enough to drown it out

The worst is trying to get to sleep—usually I am so tired it doesn’t matter but if I am rested it’s terrible as I like a completely dark, completely silent bedroom so I can hear what is goign on both in and outside the house.

Good news. Thanks. That’s second piece of medical information pertinent to me, found on this forum today. I will have to check it out, nothing else has worked to alter my tinnitus.

“There is no evidence to support the superiority of sound therapy for tinnitus over waiting list control, placebo or education/information with no device.”

In all likelihood it isn’t for all vets, only those with service connected hearing loss.
