A curious case of a man’s seemingly typical nasal symptoms landed in a medical journal after doctors discovered that a tooth growing in his nose was the actual culprit.
The 59-year-old had complained of a stuffy nose, and the gradual loss of his sense of smell over the last two years and had sought the help of a specialist after topical steroids failed to help, LiveScience reported.
The man, who was not identified by name, had a CT scan at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark which revealed a mucous-covered mass in his nasal cavity.
His doctors suspected a dermoid cyst, which can take on a strange appearance and have hair or other bizarre features.
But according to the study published in BMJ Case Reports on Feb. 21, when the doctors surgically removed the growth, they discovered an extremely rare instance of a stray tooth.
The case is so rare, that doctors estimate it occurs in just 0.1 to 1 percent of patients.
“A retained nasal tooth is rare, and the symptoms are variable,” the authors noted in the report’s abstract.
“It can resemble other diseases such as chronic rhinosinusitis.
Surgical removal is recommended to confirm the diagnosis and eliminate symptoms.”
According to the authors, the man’s symptoms improved after the tooth was removed, but doctors still aren’t sure what caused the tooth to grow, or for how long it had been present without him noticing.

I had a stray extra tooth removed when I was 16 years old.
It was wedged up under my nose. I could feel it in there but always thought it was just part of my nose supposed to be there. They wanted it out because it could have damaged the roots of my two front teeth.
My dentist told me that this is seen globally in dental circles a couple of times per year.
Probably be difficult to brush.
Nope. They removed some hairy stuff, mucous and a fingernail.

I swear, if I didn’t have to use the bathroom I would be laughing so hard! Y’all have mercy.

They could have saved it, if he’d just flossed it daily.
At the same time as I had that extraneous tooth removed they pulled my 12-year molars, as they had never come in. An x-ray revealed they were growing straight towards my nose at a 90 degree angle from where they should have been.
(interestingly my wisdom teeth then moved forward and today fill the spot where those molars should have been)
Needless to say after that I was a stitched-up bloody mess.
But I was also 16 and stupid. There was a girl at school I had been chasing after for quite some time, and I finally got up the guts to ask her out. I set the date for the Monday after the Friday I had this done, thinking “I’ll be fine by then”.
I showed up at her front door with my face swollen up like a chimpanzee and bloody stitches dangling from my mouth. No wonder that relationship never went anywhere!
My youngest son was born with four extra teeth.
May be - But unless they were growing out of his nose, ears, or forehead, still no cigar!
