Todays Cryptogram
AENV QCTSGUUXCD XU
TCEV AYGD ZJXDKXDK G
QCXD GA G HVKKGE. TGEAXD JNAYVE MXDK, FE.
You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications, unfortunately they are copyrighted so we can't use them here. So, we're just going to make up our own.
The way it works is a letter stands for another letter.
For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).
Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.
PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles. Puzzle solvers love to hear if you found the CG challenging or easy.
You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for todays Cryptogram.
Solving the puzzle under 8 minutes is good, under 6 very good, under 4 excellent and under two "you're a pro!"
Those of you looking for an added challenge can try to solve one sentence or even one word at a time, i.e. solve the entire first line, then go to the second line etc.
If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it to Hals Helper below:
You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper.
Solution to our last puzzle:
The only source of knowledge is experience. Albert Einstein
Lot's of "E"s!
less than 3....
Made the ‘correct’ guess on the last word and the rest just fell in place....
Have had some wonderful comments sent to me privately with tips on solving these puzzles.
Please share your experience with the others, even if it’s referring to yesterday’s puzzle.
I usually copy and paste our latest PING list, and for some reason it cut off a few of you from the top. SORRY about that, and the problem was fixed...
BUT it made me feel good to know that there are many of you hooked on these and you look forward to them to start your day.
Some of these puzzles are real stumpers. Don’t get discouraged if you’re stuck. Use HAL, and try to find the “E” which will almost always be the most frequent letter in the quote, then go from there.
“Tomorrow’s” puzzle took me about 20 minutes to solve. Just couldn’t get started, and I did NOT go with my instincts.
TIP OF THE DAY: A 2 letter word in the second position is frequently going to be “IS” and if a 3 letter word follows it, that word will frequently be “THE”. AND if you recognize the “ING” ending of the first word, you’re off to the races.
LOVE some of the comments regarding that moment when everything falls into place. Here’s a few.
-—”Seemed like every letter I tried fell into place!”
-—”After getting the author’s name, it was off to the races.”
-—”It was slow going at first, then I went with my instinct and figured out a couple words then the rest fell in like ripe fruit.”
-—”Couldn’t get started at all on this one. I stopped, had another cup of coffee, came back, and it just jumped out at me.”
-—”Thank heaven for HAL!”
LAST COMMENT: I WILL ALWAYS HAVE A CONJUNCTION, (I.E. “AND”, “OR” “BUT” FOLLOWING A “SINGLE” COMMA IN THESE PUZZLES. TWO OR MORE COMMAS INDICATE PHRASES THAT WILL USUALLY END WITH “AND”.
That was quick. Did you recognize the author right off the bat?
Much much quicker than yesterday — that stumped me for HOURS until I realized that when I copied it into Hal’s Helper, there was residual data from yesterday tagged on to the end!!!! Today’s got me going on the right track with the last word.
I recognized the name right away, after that it was easy.
About 3 min.
Made an incorrect guess on the last word and the rest just didn’t fit....
I also look forward to these. I think it’s brilliant that you started doing it. I guessed the suffix of the name, then the first word of the quote, then the whole name, and after that... like... taking candy from a baby? =)
“....and after that... like... taking candy from a baby? =)...”
I like!!!
4 min. Made the 'incorrect' guess on the last word (thought it was "MD"...)
When I first (also) used MD I thought of JR, saw the number of letters in last name, guessed at an ‘i’ elsewhere and the rest was ‘wham bam’....
