How much Discovery have you seen? Just the pilot?
I’m pirating season 2 now. SPOILER ALERT
I’m through the ep where Wilson Cruz comes back to life.
Some thoughts.
They should call this “The Search for Spock”, they faked out on him appearing twice already. Honestly I have little interest in revisiting Spock. Especially not in this bizarre plotline they got going on. They are fetishizing Spock. It’s neat seeing more of his parents though.
“Michael” said she said something horrible to him to get him to stay away from her cause she was afraid the “logic extremists” who tried to kill her (for being a human at a Vulcan school) would harm him. So no she didn’t screw him. There’s a shot of an upcoming ep of her smooching a bearded guy but it’s that Klingon transhuman bastard Voq.
I don’t like “Michael” very much, many are in the same boat, that’s obviously a major problem with the show. I liked Yeoh’s original character, she was no where near Genivere Bujold to me. The evil version is a treat.
I don’t know what to make of Anson Mount as Capn Pike, a character that could use a closer look. Enterprise being busted and out of commission for an extended period is a pretty flimsy reason to have him onboard. At first he was in Uni reminiscent of TOS. So we’re in a “Star Trek Generations” style thing with multiple unis in service at the same time, weird.
Do the writers want the audience to hate the “prime directive”? Seriously, eff the prime directive.
I thought the “Magic Mushroom” stuff couldn’t get dumber. I was wrong. The recent stuff with the mushroom universe was interesting enough but absurd. I need to come up with a corollary to “Clarke’s first law”.
Wilson Cruz was actually the ship’s doctor so he does not exist solely as Rapp’s BF (contrast the gay aliens husband on The Orville who doesn’t appear to have a job). To my surprise I didn’t mind the character, I like him better than Rapp that’s for sure.
I like Section 31, the Federation pansies need them.
The Chubby girl Tilly has been called “Wesley done right” and I agree with that assessment.
That whole description just makes me cringe. It’s not Star Trek whatsoever. They should’ve just done some sci-fi sodomite soaper utterly unrelated to the Trek universe instead of this abortion.
Just Season 1. I’ll wait until Season 2 is over and then I’ll have my husband do a free trial and then binge watch it.
So, watched the latest episodes, time travel absurdity is factoring into to this season of Discovery. Might explain the “non-canon”y feel.
Mike finally found Spock, inexplicably beared and mumbling like a nutcase the coordinates to....the planet Talos IV. WTF? I presumed this would have been BEFORE the Enterprise visited there, maybe not.
“Number One” made a cameo, played by Rebecca Romijn.
And guess what? Yeoh is getting a Section 31 spinoff.
From the eight episodes of season 1 I saw, the "Chief Medical Officer" on THIS show got LESS character development than "Nurse #3" assisting Dr. Beverly Crusher in a random episode, so yes he DOES exist for the sole purpose of reminding the audience that Rapp has sex with men.
FYI, as well, I had nothing against Wilson Cruz before (I was surprised he was the same guy who played the effinine character on My So Called Life), but after seeing his latest tirade on Twitter... to hell with Cruz, he's an particularly nasty SJW a-hole.
I don't see much resemblance to Wesley Crusher, aside from rank? (and she is an adult fresh out of the academy whereas he was a teen given a battlefield promotion to a comissioned rank before he even ENTERED the academy!) He was the boy wonder who Gene Roddenberry created as some kind of prodigy who was the smartest person in the role and solved the problem all the adults overlooked. Tilly is some nervous giddy wet-behind-the-ears Ensign.
She's cute and likeable, she's the "best" Discovery character by default because I think she might be the ONLY actual character on the show. The rest of them are glorified set pieces, like the ship's Helmsman (they're halfway thru season 2 and I bet none of show's regular viewers could even tell you her name), or virtue signaling characters there to loudly showcase how BOLD AND PROGRESSIVE the show is, e.g. look at how Captain Lorca is an EVIL MIDDLE AGED SOUTHERN WHITE MAN!!!
In short, Tilly would be an average Trek character (say, someone like Tom Paris) on a real Trek show. Shame she's not on one, then we could have a vested interest in following the character's growth over the course of the show.
