Scotchguard is a PTFE chemical (Polytetraflouroethene) also known by the tradename Teflon (R - Dow Chemical)
Still, Fluorine is in the same periodic family as both chlorine and bromine. Toxicity wise, tho, it is the “phenyl” grouping that is pointed to most in DPBE/PCB/PBB family as a bad actor.
Digression: Fluorine is used in stannousfluoride to strengthen tooth enamel. Interestingly enough “stannous” represents Tin (Sn), a known agent of heavy metal toxicity/cancer risk.
And, for the fluoridated water folks...no, stannousfluoride doesn’t create hydrofluoric acid when it mixes with the hydrochloric acid in the human stomach. It disassociates into components making a mix of tin, fluorine and chlorine...all in a very weak acid. If there is any recombination, Tin and chlorine have strong affinity for each other so stannouschloride would, over time, become dominant in the mixture...if allowed to equilibrate.
So... I’m guessing you weren’t an art history major...
That chemistry explanation went so far over my head I saw contrails ...
You are a smart fella, I’m thinking.
+1 for spelling Fluorine correctly and considering hydrochloric acid.
It should be noted, fluorine is a byproduct of nuclear fission; I sometimes wonder whether the Fluoridation craze (pace the Birchers) was the govt. hoping to forestall mass panic when people turned up with trace amounts if Fluoride in their systems following the above-ground nuclear testing of the 1950s (e.g. “OMG! It’s *radioactive*! We’re all gonna DIE!!”)
a slide that has no bearing on anything, ‘cept seeing PTFE gives me the heebie jeebies...
I blew up an engine on a mid 80’s Fleetwood Brouham d’elegance, that I had prepped with Slick 50, which at the time, had major PTFE (Teflon) in it. Back then, I had to drain the oil, put in Slick 50, run it awhile ,then drain that and put regular oil back in the car.
I can’t say Slick 50 was the cause, because this was Caddy’s infamous HT4100 engine.
HT stood for High Technology and became to be known as Hook & Tow 4100 times.
