....With the exception of the few highest ranking naval officials, nobody was aware of Roosevelt's intention to send the fleet around the world. Even the President's own cabinet didn't know about it. All anyone knew was that the fleet would be steaming from the east to West Coast in a training exercise.
Once the plans for the cruise became public, not everyone was impressed....
Senator Eugene Hale from Maine, chairman of the Naval Appropriations Committee, threatened to withhold money for the cruise. But this didn't bother Roosevelt, who replied in his typically brusque and forthright fashion that he already had the money and dared Congress to "try and get it back.".....

That particularly memory was that TR wanted the money, congress said, ‘no’, and TR sent the ships around the world anyway. When the ships got to Australia and ran out of money, TR told congress that if they wanted their navy back, they would have to appropriate they money to bring them home.
Looking for evidence of that, I ran across this article and thought I would share it given the current situation with wall funding. I found it an interesting read.
One thing to remember: TR is one of only 4 presidents with his face carved on Mt. Rushmore......

My Grand Uncle was a fireman aboard USS Kansas BB-21, for the around the world voyage. He remained aboard Kansas through WWI. He retired out of the Navy in 1925 as a chief water tender.

Until now, no POTUS would have been refused money to defend our border from invasion, which is his Constitutional DUTY to do. -And theirs.
From the time of the Great White Fleet America was known and respected as a dominating world power.
Yeah, we had to prove it a couple a three times, but today no sane person would fire on the US fleet from a flagged vessel of their own.
They just are not eager to die.
TR is also our last Republican President from New York — before Donald Trump.

TR certainly helped to expand .gov in many forms. Just look back at the 1912 progressive party platform.
True, and I disliked him when I was younger because of it.
Now that I am older, I have come to realize that some government regulation is necessary to protect the citizenry. Thus, my approval of building the wall and limiting the number of H1B visas.
Total free enterprise can be problematic, too.
