Ray Romano doesn't think Everybody Loves Raymond character would be sportswriter in current climate

A career change probably would’ve been in store for Ray Romano’s “Everybody Loves Raymond” character if the show was set today, the actor said.

Romano — who played Ray Barone, a sportswriter in New York, on the popular sitcom — doesn’t think it’s likely his character would have remained a writer in the current media climate.

“I think I would've quit already,” Romano told the Daily News while promoting his new movie “Paddleton.” “I think Ray Barone would've started a podcast or something.”

He continued, “I don't know. He was kind of not hard-hitting enough.” “Everybody Loves Raymond” aired for nine seasons from 1996 to 2005 and centered on the title character’s life on Long Island and his comical interactions with his eccentric family. The long-running CBS series also starred Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle and Brad Garrett.

Well, yeah - today’s sports reporting consists of hot takes and yelling - Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless might not have pioneered this nonsense, but they certainly popularized it.

Yeah Ray, you could have been anything else and I still would have never watched your show.

I loved his show. Didn’t hurt that both he and Patricia Heaton are both registered Republicans....

He’s pretty much right. Sportswriters today are terrible (TV people are worse yet)

His work on the show “Get Shorty” was really good. Think there might be another season coming as well

The woman who played his wife on “Everybody Loves Raymond” is one of the good guys in the entertainment business

He is probably saying that he wouldn’t have anything to do with the commies on ESPN and the sports industry in general. He would likely have been fired anyway because he would no doubt blast Kaepernick and the kneelers. That’s what conservatives do.

He has a 16 golf handicap. I saw him recently at the AT&T Bebble Beach Pro Am. He’s actually a pretty nice guy. Not sure where you got the big mouth impression from.....

Best episode - the boys tell their wives they are going to a psychiatrist to resolve their personality problems, but they actually are going to the horse races and over lunch they work on their psychosis. They tell the wives they are making progress and the wives are so excited. Then, one day, when they are at the psychiatrist, Deborah reads the psychiatrist’s obituary in the paper, and … all hell breaks out.

I think the reason Seinfeld and ELR were such successful, well written shows, and to some extent Tim Allen’s shows even though I really never watch them because I never warmed up to any of them-but they are successful, is because they’re first-off comedians who understand comedy. I thought ELR was one of the best comedy shows, ranking right up there with some of the classics like Lucy, Bob Newhart, some of the 60s shows like Get Smart (Mel Brooks) etc, etc. Then you realize these shows were headed by comedians, too. I’m sure they all had a major hand in the production.

I knew Patricia Heaton was a Republican, didn’t know Ray Romano was, but I can see it.

I bet this is true of many old TV shows.

Can you imagine some shows in today’s climate?

I Love Lucy
The Brady Bunch
Gilligan’s Island
Father Knows Best
Bewitched
All In The Family
I Dream of Jeannie
The Lone Ranger

Just off the top of my head, each of these as written would offend the sensibilities of today’s Hollywood idiots who greenlight shows. Each would need severe rewrites, if they were allowed on the air at all.

Loved his show! And being from a crazy Italian family, I could relate.

Times have changed... A Ray Barone sportswriter would have had to take a stand about kneeling, and he would have probably been fired. As well as all the characters from The Office for their un-PC descretions. And Jerry Seinfeld’s friends like Elaine and George would all now be ostracized for their thoughts, even though they were liberal for their time.

That was a good one, but I would have a hard time picking a favorite. One of my favorites, though, was The Angry Family where one of the twins writes a story about an angry family, describing the Barrones to a T, and they go through counseling, etc, only to find out he was writing about a TV show. But they all jumped to the same conclusion because of their guilt. I love Deborah’s parents and Amy’s family, too. Just a really funny show.

Mr. Romano goes to a nice golf course here in So Cal. He is a gentleman. I have two tv shows on disc: Everybody Loves Raymond and Carol Burnett. Always fun to watch again.

In the past I read Jim Murray (LA Times), Bruce Jenkins (SF Chronicle), Tim Keown (SF Chronicle) and Bill Plaschke (LA Times). Today newspapers are repulsive. I was repulsed by Herb Caen at the SF Chronicle who regularly promoted adultery and insulted readers who were against adultery. Losers work for newspapers and they know their customers are decreasing.

Now I get my sports from MLB podcasts.

Peter Boyle was a great actor and played the monster on Young Frankenstein (1974)

I think we can throw Oscar Madison in there too. In todays world, its more like Felix would have been the sportswriter of the two. lol
