What is the main cause of homelessness?

For women in particular, domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness. And the top causes of homelessness among families are: (1) lack of affordable housing, (2) unemployment, (3) poverty, and (4) low wages, in that order. And guess what states have the highest homeless? Hawaii and New York, have a higher per capita homeless rate than California's. Finally, records show California, indeed, has the highest total homeless population at over 150,000, far more than second place New York. Will the invading caravans from south of the border help relieve the homeless situation especially in California? And don't forget Los Angeles has declared it's now a sanctuary city.

A keenly observant post.

Leaves you wondering what happened to Henry Shelby. But I figure that lifestyle couldn’t have lasted more than a decade. It requires the good health of relative youth.

I agree, mental illness is a big factor. Some folks suffer from paranoia/schizo and often feel like someone is spying on them in their rooms, home, or they are listening in the walls.

Drugs or mental health, or both. That is what causes homelessness. Trying to fix it by focusing on anything else is really stupid.

Poor decisions and refusal to do what it takes to afford shelter....kind of like posting vanities that try to address a complex set of mental and emotional illnesses with a simplistic approach...individuals and societies interact in a very complex way.

How about doing a "study" on why so many FReepers donate nothing and then expect others to care what they say...that might be a useful study.

once a year. Sadly some look great while in enclosure, but fail once outside of the wall.

See this now with autistics and MI in highly protective group homes...they function well, but then are kicked down to less restrictive environments or supported apartments...and they fail. and this becomes a merry go round.

The “walls” matter.

Well, any others (esp. Californians) want to weigh in?

I’m with Freedom56. Untallied costs would be tremendous. Then, is it good enough? Do we pay electric and gas too? Are we supporting their drug addicted way of life? If so, then do we buy them drugs to make their lives more comfortable? Where does it end? it will never end ...

Meanwhile we (the few) who have gumption, jobs, and get-up-and-go have long since run screaming. “If a man will not work, he should not eat” the Biblical injunction applies here.

Sadly, tho such a plan for facilities might be initiated with the best of intentions, I suspect govt would screw it up just like they have Veteran’s Administration-run hospitals :(

Especially in Dem-controlled states like California.

Any ‘Facilities’ that the government ‘provides’ to fix the problem will be worse. Mental institutions have provided safe shelter in the past.

Laws prohibiting homelessness, however, protect the citizenry from icky things like cholera and, oh yes, typhus.
