James Comey calls for removing Confederate statues in Richmond amid blackface scandals

Washington (CNN)Former FBI Director James Comey called Thursday for the removal of Confederate statues in Virginia's capital in the wake of blackface scandals involving top statewide elected officials, in an op-ed for The Washington Post.

"Expressing bipartisan horror at blackface photos is essential, but removing the statues would show all of America that Virginia really has changed," Comey writes. "There is no doubt that Virginia's leaders need to be held accountable for their personal history, but every Virginia leader is responsible for the racist symbols that still loom over our lives," Comey writes.

Comey is simply applying Alinsky tactics. His name deserves to be forever linked with Benedict Arnold's in U.S. history.

However, regarding Confederate statues, that issue has been thoroughly debated on FR over the last 2 years. In my mind there are 2 types of Confederate monuments - (1) memorials honoring Confederate dead and (2) statues honoring Confederate generals and politicians. Many level-headed Freepers have written that both should remain in place because they represent history, good and bad. Afterall, we are not (yet) the U.S.S.R. where they meticulously scrubbed Russian history and their own communist actions.

The residents of Budapest, Hungary, demonstrated a thoughtful approach in 1993 when they created Memento Park. They collected a selection of U.S.S.R. Cold War statues/monuments and put them in this park, instead of the junkyard, so they could remember their history.

Actually, blackface comes from the song “Jumpin’ Jim Crow” first performed by whites in blackface after a white theater producer saw black children singing the song in the streets of a southern city - might have been New Orleans. This was around 1820, I think.

Blackface in Shakespeare is a different story completely. The great Edwin Booth played him as an Arab with very little makeup. That role is conceived differently by different people.
