Hey, these kids may not be as hopeless as we all thought!

I could probably post a thousand links to a thousand songs from that era. But Van Morrison is one of my favorites.

Here's one I haven't been able to get out of my head lately.

Feel free to post your own.

Maybe they should look at the old ways of living a bit too instead of dreaming of Socialist utopias.

I grew up with Britney Spears and Taylor Swift but will say that I’m sometimes fascinated by early 1980’s music like Falco, Nena, The Vapors, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Spandau Ballet, and etc.

And I loathe rap.

This is why television ads for years now have had to use music from the 70’s and 80’s. There are no bands, musicians, or songwriters today; just insipid little millennials singing insipid little songs that all sound exactly alike. There’s no substance to the songs and no talent possessed by the singers. Oddly enough, one of the very few exceptions is Lady Gaga. Never would have thought I would compliment her, but after her Super Bowl performance a couple of years ago I have to say that while super strange and of course a liberal idiot, she does certainly have talent.

Thanks for posting this. My kids are a bit older, but are quick to sing along with many songs from the era cited (1960-1999). And I might not be very objective, but there was some very fine music created and produced in those years, IMO.

My 18 year old and his friends like to try and stump me with 70s-80s music and if I know the title and group. I’m amazed at how much they know from that time period.

Maybe they are finding out the bands actually played instruments back then?

I was checking out Oldies CDs in the library and a new, young employee was looking over my selection and commenting how much she enjoys music from that era vs today

It’s really a slam dunk. Virtually nothing today catches my attention. That goes for TV and movies too.

All of my under 30 years old nieces and nephews listen to 60’s and 70’s rock. They can tell you more about Led Zeppelin, The Doors and The Stones than anybody who grew up in that era.

My brothers 11 year old daughter knows almost every Beatle song by heart.

Songs from this era proved to be much more memorable than tunes released in the 21st century.

Pop music now is all manufactured rather than created. Performers are selected for their look, they are given generic songs that follow a proven formula for tempo and chord progressions, and they are autotuned into pitch perfect divas. And not just traight pop, all genres. Interesting that some younger folk are saying "I've had it, let's hear something different."

How old am I?

My Social Security number is in Roman numerals.

My last birthday cake set off the smoke alarm.

I had nicknames for the dinosaurs in my subdivision.

MOST OF ALL!!!

While in college, I went to a concert featuring the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Temptations and Little Anthony and the Imperials....for ten bucks!

Yup - just look in the comments below the videos on Youtube - what's old is now new to another generation of fans.

It’s always fun to people-watch at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s become an embarrassment, pandering to groups with followings and insider faves without any regard to excellence. But what are ALL generations spending their time on? Elvis, the Stones, the Beatles, have the most crowds. It seems nobody really cares about the stuff from disco on.

Great Van Morrison song. It’s from the “Back on Top” album from the late 90s.

All the songs are good, but my favorite is probably “Golden Autumn Day.” I don’t know his politics, but he certainly comes across as a conservative in that song. Maybe that’s why I like it so much.

There is some music that is absolutely beyond it out there. I don’t know even what genre to put it in. They play the garbage at the gym all the time, and in other public places. It all sounds the same. It’s truly an assault on me. I feel violated. That reminds me, I need to call the gym to complain. I suggest that others who feel the same do similar. Start telling these people you are not going to patronize their stores if they continue to play this crap. I sometimes go to the gym in the morning and that’s when people who are 60, 70, 80 years old are there and the gym is playing this music that would only appeal to the brain dead and urban youth!? Bunch of self-centered assholes who are in charge. They think the world started with them and revolves around them.

Western music died with the hypercommercialization-of-garbage era brought about by the talent-deprived group known as Nirvana managing to break all sales records to date. It proved beyond any reasonable doubt that making good music is not at all essential to selling a great many records.

And the point was quite profitable thereafter, as if talent doesn’t matter, you don’t have to pay for it, and any grunting savage with a microphone will do, the suckers will still buy it.

My daughter is 29 and she will only listen to classic rock. My son who is 34 listens more to prog rock. Brought em up right.

My 14 year old listens to Dean Martin, Sinatra, Elvis, Willy Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Jim Reeves, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I’m forgetting. She has an excellent playlist. Our oldest daughters have good and terrible taste in music. Our oldest son likes country music. Our second son likes country, but I bet he would enjoy the 14 year old sister’s music. Our youngest sons like a variety as well. They like to sing.

Tuned into some Amazon show about a group of early twenty-something tech nerds...and the first song I hear is Motown. This happens a lot.
