Scotlands capital Edinburgh is to become the first British city to introduce a tourist tax to try to better manage the impact of swelling visitor numbers and booming hotel occupancy, its council said on Thursday. [ ]
The council said it would use funds raised by the £2 ($2.60) per room per night tax to improve facilities and better manage the city, as other European cities such as Barcelona and Rome have done.
The tourist tax has been unpopular with some businesses, however. A survey conducted by the council found only a narrow 51 percent of accommodation-providers supported the idea, which needs a final sign-off by Scotlands devolved parliament.
This isnt the right time for a new tax and more bureaucracy for small businesses, Garry Clark, the head of the Federation of Small Businesses, said on Twitter.

And what if you are illegally in the country? Can you be taxed for that?
America has been doing that since the first room tax was charged for B&B’s, centuries ago.
“Recent news seems to indicate Vegas tourism is depressed.”
Interesting, I haven’t seen anything since August, and Q3 is over:
“Last weeks round of earnings reports and conference calls were difficult for the big Las Vegas-based casino operators. Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International, which each own multiple properties on the Las Vegas Strip, both reported soft numbers for the second quarter and predicted more headwinds in the third quarter.”
Gotcha by 00:00:17. :-)
Never been and always wanted to go to Scotland. Have a friend that likes to travel with me so off we go! Italy next year.
Have never read or watched Outlander but when researching our trip found that yes, it is the reason tourism is up there.
