Earth's 5 warmest years on record have occurred since 2014
Axios ^ | February 6, 2019 | Andrew Freedman

Posted on 02/06/2019 5:59:31 PM PST by EdnaMode

Last year was Earth's 4th-warmest year on record, coming in behind 2016, the planet's warmest recorded year, as well as 2015 and 2017, according to information released Wednesday by NOAA, NASA and the U.K. Met Office.

Why it matters: The yearly rankings don't tell the whole story of long-term climate change, since natural variability can still push or pull an individual year up or down the rankings. However, the overall picture is growing starker with each passing year. Nine of the 10 warmest years on record since reliable data began in 1880 have occurred since 2005. At the same time, greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels — as well as deforestation and intensive agriculture — have skyrocketed to levels not seen in more than 800,000 years.

By the numbers: For 2018, the average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 1.42°F (0.79°C) above the 20th century average, according to NOAA.

NASA data is so confusing. Check out their contradicting statements and you can’t tell which way is up. A search of statements relating NASA and Global Warming says the earth is warming, it’s cooling , ice is disappearing, most ice ever, etc., etc. We need a TV show pitting one side of NASA against the other side and let the audience vote. Maybe some of truth will come out in that process.

Here is another opinion...

The planet is no longer warming Andy May / 5 hours ago February 6, 2019

(snip)

If the IPCC hypothesis was correct, the warming rate should increase (accelerate) if CO2 is increasing rapidly. The warming rate can only decrease (decelerate) if CO2 is increasing more slowly and can only turn into cooling (negative rate) if CO2 is decreasing.

But the hypothesis doesn’t fit the observations. The HadCRUT 4 rate of temperature change (°C/year) is no longer increasing. In fact, it stopped increasing ~1994 and has been decreasing since. Global warming has been decelerating for over 20 years despite CO2 levels increasing at the same rapid rate.

It’s all about calculated estimates of uncertainty. Those estimates are always included in real science. Let’s say you make a measurement of 3 units. But your calculated estimate of uncertainty is +/- 5 units. That makes your measurement worthless.

That’s exactly what’s going on here! The Climate Change folks are throwing out all sorts of data. But they will not include any honest estimates of uncertainty. That makes their data worthless.

5 years since 2014? Or 5 years including 2014?

Journalists are the poorest writers on Earth. Just the worst.

“Researchers have identified five separate ice ages. The oldest of these is the Huronian glaciation which occurred 2.4 to 2.1 billion years ago!”

“The next glaciation period the earth confronted was the Cryogenian period which lasted for 200 million years. This event occurred approximately 850 to 635 million years ago during the Neoproterozoic era.”

“After the Cryogenian period, earth experienced the Andean-Saharan glaciation. This happened about 450 to 420 million years ago and brought with it the first major extinction”

“The 4th major glaciation to occur was the Karoo period. This event happened 360 to 260 million years ago and saw the next mass extinction of flora and fauna. The Karoo period was brought on by an extreme increase in plant life. The Earth was covered in plants that consumed all of the carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere and emitted high levels of oxygen.”

“Surprisingly, the earth is currently experiencing a glacial period. This one started about 2.58 million years ago and is still going on, this time with significantly milder temperatures. Antarctica first froze over about 14 million years ago due to the creation of the Himalayan mountains. The higher they grew, the more weathering they were exposed to which decreased carbon dioxide levels. This time, the glacial and interglacial periods were controlled by the orbiting of the earth and the levels of sun that reached the surface. The periods alternated every 41,000 years until 1 million years ago when the glacial periods changed to a cycle of 100,000 years. These cooled down temperatures possibly resulted in the evolution of homo-sapiens.”

Now, if someone besides known liars would make these claims, maybe they’d be worth listening to.

Good one. His theory that even a lie told often enough by the right people will become believed as fact is the basis of today’s fake media.

have skyrocketed to levels not seen in more than 800,000 years.

Prove it. Someone was there 800,000 years ago to document this, I would expect. Let’s see their data.

I think the question we should really ask is "what was happening 800k years ago that resulted in levels of GHGs as high as today's?"

1.5 million years of climate history revealed after scientists solve mystery of the deep August 9, 2012 - University of Cambridge

Included in this is a much fuller representation of what happened during the "Mid-Pleistocene Transition" (MPT) -- a major change in Earth's climate system which took place sometime between 1.25 million and 600 thousand years ago. Before the MPT, the alternation between glacial periods of extreme cold, and warmer interglacials, happened at intervals of approximately 41,000 years. After the MPT, the major cycles became much longer, regularly taking 100,000 years. The second pattern of climate cycles is the one we are in now. Interestingly, this change occurred with little or no orbital forcing.

(snip)

The resulting picture shows that ice volume has changed much more dramatically than ocean temperatures in response to changes in orbital geometry.

I'm going to go way out on a limb and guess that car exhaust doesn't affect the geometry of the planet's orbit around the sun.

And during the Middle Ages. And EVERY animal suppossedly threatened by globull warming today survived every single major change in climate.

Yes!

If the Earth is actually warmer, then the amount of fossil fuels burned for heat would be greatly reduced.

That should make the environmentalists happy.

Oh...I forgot....NOTHING makes the ecofreaks happy!

How do they even define the temperature of the earth at any given time? It doesn’t make any sense.
