What is it? A new minor league to test American's appitite for football and give players a chance to audition for the NFL. Founded by Charlie Ebersol and former NFL executive Bill Polian.
What are the teams and their head coaches?
Eastern Conference
Atlanta Legends, Kevin Coyle
Birmingham Iron, Tim Lewis
Memphis Express, Mike Singletary
Orlando Apollos Steve Spurrier
Western Conference
Arizona (Tempe) Hotshots, Rick Neuheisel
Salt Lake Stallions, Dennis Erickson
San Antonio Commanders, Mike Riley
San Diego Fleet, Mike Martz
Did they put a lot of thought into these team names?? Probably not.
How do you watch it? The inugaral game, San Diego at San Antonio, is on CBS, Saturday FEB 9th, 8:30 Eastern Standard Time (pre game at 8). There are 4 games a week, one a week will air on CBS Sports Network, Memphis at Birmingham at 4 eastern on Sunday FEB 5th, the rest will available on the AAF app for free.
Are the rules different from NFL? There are no kickoffs, teams will begin possesions on their own 25 yard line. There are no PAT kicks, teams will attempt 2-point conversions after each touchdown. There will be no TV time outs and fewer commercials. The play clock is 35 seconds instead of 40. Overtime will be "High School rules" each team gets a possention on their own 10 yard line, games end in tie if still tied after that. I don't much care for elimination of kickoffs cause I know the NFL wants to follow suit, they've already tried hard to ruin them so no one will care when they are abolished. No PATs probably makes it more interesting though.
Where can you find more info? The internet. https://aaf.com/schedule
Will this be the thread for the whole season or will it be weeky or whatever? That depends on interest level, my whims, and the whims of anyone else that might like to post AAF threads.
Is there a picks contest? I don't plan on it but feels free to make picks!!!
Should you care? Only if you want to. Feel free to just ignore the thread if you don't! Or you could troll it, whatever you want.
The Express at Iron game is on the CBS Sports app at 3 CST tomorrow.
Once again Army beats Navy!!
Like the sissies they are
Went to the CBS Sports app on my Fire TV and the game was not there. So went to youtube and searched for "Alliance of American Football App and there it is--
Its on http://www.cbssports.com/cbs-sports-network/
Doesn’t look like the Birmingham team is going to make it. I’ve been high school football games with more people in attendance.
Their QB is impressive so far.
The only decent looking uniform I’ve seen in the three games is the Birmingham team.
I have the app on my Roku tv, I haven’t used it in a while. I go there and it wants me to pay like CBS all access.
So, I go to their website, signed in with my tv provider.
Iron D is playing very well, shutting down the Trains.
My Momma told me "if I see anything like that I would turn to stone."
I think I feel it starting.... :(
Hard to go wrong with a classic black.
3 score lead now, plenty of time but I’d say it’s all over.
Now if the Iron would just add some gold to it they'd be top notch.
Something like this combo...
As usual, Spurrier whups up on a team from Georgia.
So, I will live with being 3 - 1 for the week as I should have paid better attention.
Next week's games are:
Salt Lake at Birmingham Sat, Feb 16 1:00 PM CT
Arizona at Memphis Sat, Feb 16 7:00 PM CT
Orlando at San Antonio Sun, Feb 17 3:00 PM CT
Atlanta at San Diego Sun, Feb 17 7:00 PM CT
Therefore going by how the first week went, I see the Iron making the Stallions 0 and 2--
The Hotshots should beat the hapless Express--
Orlando looks to steamroll my Commanders to a 1 & 1 record--
And the first AAF winless bowl have the Enemas squeaking past Atlanta--
I do find it interesting that on the AAF app and AAF website, nowhere will you find conference standings.
Cletus picks:
Birmingham - impressive win
Arizona - Looks middle of the pack but @ home.
San Antonio - Strong defensive show
San Diego - The enema of my enema is my enema...at home.
As soon as I get a chance, I’m going to attend an Iron game.
I hope they can hang on. The Tide takes a lot of football mojo outa folks, but we need to support our new ‘Bama pro team!
This win will help, IMHO.
Now, no one has posted the actual scores for this week, so I will:
Week 1
Orlando 40, Atlanta 6
San Antonio 15, San Diego 6
Birmingham 26, Memphis 0
Arizona 38, Salt Lake 22
If the Express does not improve a lot, I expect the attendance at their games could be embarrassing.
Sports Headline Circa 2071
One of the few remaining AAF legacy teams, The Memphis Express, has once again missed it’s opportunity to play in the season-ending Federation Bowl. Their loss to the upstart Ottumwa Tarkentons by 17 points sealed their fate.
Express fans, along with their Detroit Lions soul-mates in the NFL, still await that day when they can claim that they have truly achieved.
Shouldn’t it be the Ottumwa Grape Nehis?
What evz. I’m just a fan of Tarkenton.
