"Would those 2 routes to San Francisco and Los Angeles become known as Central Pacific and South Pacific?" PAR35: "The transcontinental link across Texas was completed in 1881."
Right, found a map which gives all the names & dates:

Very nice. How we moved through the 20th century. I forgot about Union Pacific. The UP route on the map shows it running very close to small town in eastern Oregon named Union, which is important in my family history. I wonder if there is a connection.

Since there was no good RR route through the central Rockies, Denver was bypassed. But the city fathers understood the vital importance of that newfangled technology, so they quickly wrangled a UP spur from Cheyenne and the Kansas Pacific from KC. So, Denver would prosper.

vehemently garrulous on the wrong side of every question that comes before itI've known people like that. You can usually know what to do by doing the opposite of their opinion.

Tabor is in southwest Iowa, about 25 miles north of the Missouri line.Missouri politics were counter-intuitive. "Little Dixie" is north of the Missouri River. The anti-slavery folks who would become Republicans were in the hill country south of the River.

"The anti-slavery folks who would become Republicans were in the hill country south of the River." I had Basic Training at Leonard Wood, have been back to that area many times since.
It's beautiful & friendly country, not so much farming going on these days.

John Brown to His Family, February 10, 1859 TABOR, IOWA, Feb. 10, 1859.
DEAR WIFE AND CHILDREN, ALL, I am once more in Iowa, through the great mercy of God. Those with me, and other friends, are well. I hope soon to be at a point where I can learn of your welfare, and perhaps send you something besides my good wishes. I suppose you get the common news. May the God of my fathers be your God!

My cousin was a school teacher on Fort Leonard Wood, widely known as “Fort Lost in the Woods.” It is a very agreeable part of the country.

I am once more in Iowa, through the great mercy of God.I don't think the good citizens of Tabor felt the same way about Brown's presence in their town, judging from the resolution they passed 3 days prior to this letter (see reply #11).
