Aretha Franklin and the question mark

Posted on 02/04/2019 8:35:56 AM PST by Waverunner

Did anyone else notice the Question mark at the end on the stadium banner showing the words to the national anthem?
AND THE LAND OF THE BRAVE? is what appeared behind Gladys Knight while she was singing.
It was like a not so subtle dig at the national anthem.
Lokked for a picture, but it should be on the video.

Always fun when a grammar nazi gets caught on their own attempted correction. :)

Complete version of “The Star-Spangled Banner”

BTW, that's only the first verse.

The easy, fast & fun way to learn how to sing: 30DaySinger.com Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I didn’t watch it, but that would be correct. The last sentence of the first verse is a question, asking if the Star Spangled banner still waves over the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Don’t make a big thing about it...it was correct!

Isn’t that how questions usually end?

AND THE LAND OF THE BRAVE?

I went to high school at Lompoc (CA) High. We were the Braves. At football games, we sang the national anthem and at the end, we put particular emphasis on BRAVES!!!.

That's how I know its not LAND OF THE BRAVE, but LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE(S)

It is actually a question:

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O say can you read
What the lyrics do say?
They include the question mark
So you can’t claim foul play

Haha.

Too late, I think.

You missed a great defensive game, with the Patriots adjusting on offense and outsmarting the Rams defense in the 4th quarter and “trampling” them...thus fulfilling Daniel 8:7. Lol! ;-)

And, of course, I screwed up the coding

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Yeah, I caught the bug after visiting Australia and New Zealand. Now I try to watch whenever there’s a match on. I’m still in the learning phase.

Do you even know the words to the Star Spangled Banner?

Last line of the first stanza:

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Yes, and at least up to the early 70's Stanford University proudly depicted an American Indian Brave.

As a native Californian (now transplanted), I would be interested in reading how you would describe today's Lompoc when compared with that of your high schools days. Thanks!
