Twitter deliberately spreads disinformation on a worldwide scale. It employs manipulative algorithms to suppress opposing views. It decides what stories are important - whether it's a child smiling at an Indian, or a baby-voiced headcase claiming she was almost raped at an imaginary party 40 years ago. It has unprecedented power over the media and which stories are covered.
Why does Trump use a service that is so destructive and so biased against the right? If he left twitter for another service, twitter would lose a lot of its power and influence.
Everyone here should sign up on Gab. This company has been excluded by all payment processors (credit card companies, Paypal) because they allow all speech that is legal. Free speech is a fundamental principle of western society. Without it, the government and other power entities suppress ideas, facts and truth. Along with those, free speech provides lies and misinformation. Western civilization decided that this was an excellent tradeoff. Without free speech, societies remain primitive and brutal. Such societies still exist. An important part of the tyrant’s toolkit is to make people afraid to talk about anything important for fear of ostracism, unemployment, jail, and death. The regressive “progressive movement” in the US and other places is against free speech and imposes speech codes in universities, workplaces and government. In the UK, people are routinely prosecuted for saying things (generally, about Islam) that are still legal here.
Here is what amounts to a free speech manifesto from Gab recently:
Gab Community Members,
Gab.com operates according to one principal rule: if speech is allowed under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and our User Guidelines, it is allowed on our site. This is because, per Sir Stephen Sedley in the seminal English free speech case DPP v. Redmond-Bate, freedom only to speak inoffensively is not worth having.”
We are proud to have recently met our fundraising goal of $1.07m raised directly from The People. We have made considerable progress this month making Gab the home of free speech, free association, and the free market online. This includes an update to our mute system that gives more control to individual users to shape their own experience. Unfortunately we still have not been able to get a new payment processor, although we are accepting checks to our PO Box and will be integrating bitcoin as a payment option shortly.
On a daily basis, our company uses the protection afforded by the First Amendment, federal data privacy law, and American global hegemony to provide a utility for users all over the world, wheresoever they might be, to publish their innermost thoughts and engage in open dialogue without fear of recrimination from unfriendly and repressive governments. Put another way, we structure our affairs to afford all our users the full measure of due process rights available in the United States.
As a result, Gab is now the fastest-growing social media platform in the world. We have acquired over 800,000 users and new Gabbers are joining the site at a rate of nearly 100,000 a month from across the planet. Gab has over 10.6 million visits a month and is quickly becoming a home for those who wish to think, speak, and express themselves freely.
One unintended consequence of our moderation policy is that Gab has attracted, shall we say, a colorful user base. Most if not all of the team, from the CEO down to our external contractors and service providers, can find an enormous amount of content on the site which we each find morally or politically objectionable, even personally hateful.
However, we understand that adopting a moderation policy that mirrors the First Amendment will result in users of our site expressing views with which we disagree, including “the thought that we hate.” See Matal v. Tam, 582 U.S. ___ (2017). We do not, unlike virtually every other social media company in existence, think we have any right to try to change what our users think.
The mainstream media strongly implies that Gab’s provisioning of a forum for this speech runs the risk of encouraging expression “(escalating) from online speech to real-world action.” We dissent. Hateful speech may be found on every platform with millions of users, including Twitter and Facebook; Gab is not alone in this regard.
Furthermore, we actively monitor the site for speech that crosses the line from the merely outrageous into the truly threatening or unlawful. Where criminal activity is brought to our attention, we act swiftly to curtail it and, where possible, cooperate with law enforcement to ensure our users’ safety - real, physical, safety, not wishy-washy millennial “safe space” safety - is secured.
When one creates a space where controversial speech is permitted, controversial speech should be expected. This is only news for anyone who doesn’t understand what “free speech” actually means. And today, Gab stands as the largest social network in the world that willing to take the heat involved in standing by this oldest and most classically liberal principle of liberal democracy.
Much has been made recently of social media companies’ moderation policies seeking to strike balances between civility and liberty. Civility-oriented moderation strategies are referred to as the “European tradition” and liberty-oriented strategies are referred to as the “American tradition.”
We follow the American tradition to the letter. We will continue to do so as long as the company exists.
Yours sincerely,
Gab.com
> because nobody else uses Gab
If Trump made it known that he is duplicating his posts there, membership would climb quickly,
as it has already done. Up from almost nobody to almost a million users in two years.
Sometimes “conservative” actually does mean “dumb and slow.”
What site is that?
And you spelled "retarded" wrong.
Because nobody does.
I don’t know why you hate Twitter, but it was instrumental in the election of Donald John Trump. As was Mrs. Clinton being a horrible woman.
Pres Trump said himself that Twitter was like owning your own newspaper without the expenses or liability.
He can shout out a “headline” to hundreds of millions of people exactly the way he wants, when he wants.
You’re worried about all the wrong things. Comments, doxxing, death threats? Honey badger don’t care.
Twitter, try to keep up
Trump would be a fool to open an account there. And Trump is no fool.
That's one thing that makes Free Republic special among conservative websites. They actively moderate the site and ensure that anything posted like that here gets immediately zotted out of existence.
Since everybody in Washington is on twitter now, nobody gets blamed for the nuttier twitterers, but it would be different if Trump moved to another site.
If Gabbers want to take it upon themselves to retweet (or regab) the president's stuff - and do it reliably and correctly - maybe some people will switch from twitter to gab.
If Twiddle is so great, why aren't you there?
Trump won because he bypassed MSM. He can do that with any platform. Twitter has gotten progressively worse since 2016. It now bans users for saying women don’t have penises. It’s ridiculous.
And, yes, I do care that they helped put the lives of children in danger. I don’t care what a honey badger thinks.
Great? Pretty much every comment I wrote was about how dangerous and destructive twitter is.
Then how to President Trump's tweets get out there? Wouldn't the algorithms suppress them?
I'm actually a little terrified by how many replies here are anti-free speech. I knew lefties hated free speech, but I thought the right had a little more sense.
Jack gave an interview yesterday with Joe Rogan where he explained he has a different set of rules for public figures than he has for the rest of users. He even stated that terms of service violations don’t apply the same for them. So basically, a blue check twitter user can get away with doing things that a normal person cannot.
GAB is this way but even if it weren’t Trump would use Twitter because in addition to offering wider exposure he makes Progressive heads explode and outs both their totalitarian marxist views and their insanity. On GAB they would never see it to react before thinking.
they are there... and other racists, porn, etc.
"Free speech" doesn't mean everyone has to listen to what everyone else is saying. We also have "free association," and the president is smart enough not to associate himself with Gab if it allows the type of stuff that Travis McGee posted as an example (to make a point).
I wish there were another social platform besides Twitter that the president could use. But Gab isn't the answer. Maybe there's another option?
Lefty operatives have the system under their control and deliberately deface and vandalize every single one of Trump’s tweets like clockwork.
