Clive Swift, who played the exasperated husband of Hyacinth Bucket in the 1990s TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 82.
Swift, who spent ten years at the Royal Shakespeare Company before breaking into television, died at home after a short illness.
He played Richard Bucket opposite Dame Patricia Routledge in the sitcom, rolling his eyes as his on-screen wife tried to improve her social standing.
Swift, who was born in Liverpool in 1936, had been an actor for decades before achieving fame. I could walk the street unrecognised, but all that changed with Keeping Up Appearances, he said.

"I'm forceful and executive! I'm forceful and executive!"
Wonderful actor. Famous for being Richard Bucket (pronounced Bouquet!) although I remember him from the brilliant tv series “The Barchester Chronicles” which made Alan Rickman a star.
It’s pronounced “boo-kay”
To show how untethered to the media I am, out of curiosity I googled Clive Swift, I saw his picture, and still have no clue who he is.
The show that featured not one but two Rose’s (Shirley Stelfox and Mary Millar, both who have also passed).
My favourite scene was the picnic episode when Hyacinth insisted on rowing down to the site, gets a mess of water reeds and muck dumped on her, and then stoically keeps on rowing. The look on her face is priceless.
Well, here’s some ‘educational materials’ for you that may enjoy. :-)

I’ve only seen him on tv as Richard and though I wished he’d have stood up to Hyacinth at times, Clive did a wonderful job playing the character Richard. So many laughs.

“...and still have no clue who he is.”
Wonderful, very funny...and clean...British humour.
(Although, I wanted to strangle his wife sometimes...)
bkmk
My grandmother could have been Hyacinth’s doppleganger to a T. Mannerisms, gossiping, putting on airs and the dresses. There was also the Rose & Oslo types on her side. The show was like a family album.
I loved him. Poor put upon Richard. RIP sir.
Thats too funny! Family events must have been lively.
I heard that last night...Funny show...PBS has English comedies on Saturday night ‘Are You being Served?’, ‘Keeping Up Appearances’, ‘As Time Goes By’ and ‘Fresh Fields’. As Time is the best but all are great...
I had forgotten how much the Buckets reminded me of my former MIL and FIL. Poor Ken!
He played Ector in Excalibur (1981).
Enjoyed “Open All Hours” as well. And of course, “Fawlty Towers”. LOL.
