“when the singing between the German soldiers and the French supporters singing the Marseillaise breaks out I tear up every time,”
A great scene. In that scene the movie felt very real.
I can’t imagine what it was like to be under occupation like that.
A wonderful film that is all the more beautiful because it is filmed in black and white, which highlights the film’s dramatic tension.
I read somewhere that the German soldiers were originally to sing the Horst Wessel March, the Nazi Party's theme song, but the fact that this tune was copyrighted might have caused problems with releasing the film overseas. So Die Wacht am Rhein (the guard on the Rhine), a nineteenth-century German patriotic song, was substituted.
Incidentally, the Marseillaise remained the national anthem of the Vichy regime in France, at least officially, although they most likely preferred their own theme song Maréchal, Nous Voilà (Marshal, we are here)
So many great lines in Casablanca
I like when the German officer is interviewing Rick, he ask if he is a Democrat or Republican, Bogart replies, I’m a drunkard.
They’re doing a remake with Jay-Z and Beyonce, it’s gonna be dope yo.
The Caine Mutiny
Oh yeah, is that the one where they torture the Germans with water? Make pretend they have enough to take a bath? LOL! That was great! “Wasser!Wasser!”
That’s the one.
There has never been a remake
Some movies should never be ‘remade’................A Star is Born is one..................
The title was “The Cheap Detective”.
“So many great lines in Casablanca.”
I made a mistake, once, of going to a website that lists all the memorable quotes from Casablanca, looking for the exact wording of one.
On and on and on the page went! By the time I got through reading the hundreth great and memorable quote, I figured I might just as well have watched the movie again.
I’ll add my vote to this as among my three favorite movies of all time.
It never gets old, and you get the same interest in the characters every time you see it. The camera work in the scene where Capt. Renaud goes upstairs to meet with Rick in the casino, to alert him to the impending arrest, is something to note. Watch how well Bogart’s shadow is placed on the wall when Bogart is not even in the shot with Renaud. Deft.

“Ghostbusters” was another.
Bogart does an amazing job in this movie. His character at the start is callous and cynical. A man who trusts nobody and who, in his own words “I stick my neck out for nobody” which we see illustrated in the sharpest way possible right up front. Then in walks his old flame, the woman that broke him and who now wants his help saving her new lovers life. The way he deals with that, comes to terms with it is just fantastic. Fantastic writing, amazing acting, great cinematography. It all comes together in this film.
That’s an excellent movie.
Leslie Howard died with others when the plane they were in was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the Bay of Biscay in 1943.
A great movie.
If a movie is to be ‘remade’, then the directors and producers should at least wait until the original stars have passed on, as a professional courtesy..................
And yet it was made ‘in a hurry’ and ‘on the cheap’..................
It’s time...
