Vanity Identify this patch

Posted on 01/29/2019 10:24:42 PM PST by jdirt

Hi Guys, I found this in the attic. My father was in the WWII and he made Normandy. This emblem is on a dark green "Genuine Basque Beret" that was made in England. I searched the whole internet and can't identify it. I even tried google image search. Thank you

The patch has a black background. The two gold stripes are outlined with red stitches. The rest is gold stitches.

Since it was on a beret made in England I sent the picture to a couple of British veteran’s groups in case it turns out to be a British patch.

Great Thank you.

Yes I see the resemblance of the coat of arms, but its the wrong color and I believe under coat of arms tradition, the correct color is very important.

I also looked for Vietnamese flashes but came up empty.

It means your Father was secretly a three star General in the Basque Army.

Concealed inside the patch is a microdot with directions to your family estate in the Pyrenees.

Also called "flashes".

This is prominent on the front of the beret? (And NOT the emblem of the manufacturer?)

I’ve run into this problem before, namely identifying military patches, flashes, insignia, etc., and I’m really surprised there isn’t a patch identification website somewhere out there, but there doesn’t appear to be one.

If some dedicated soul would just do it, it’d be done once and for all and only occasional updates would be needed.

The Pentagon must keep a record of these things. I mean, a unit doesn’t adopt an insignia without passing it up the chain of command for approval, IF it’s even done that way, which I doubt. It’s more likely they are passed down the chain of command, not up.

The Pentagon has to have a record of all these patches.

Not something I recognise, but the colours and symbols remind me of Spanish rank badges (for modern examples see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Guard_(Spain) )
If it was a rank badge then expect it to be worn on one side of the beret, left or right, with a unit badge on the other.

Father in law thinks it’s a unit patch.
He is an expert. Couldn’t tell me what unit.

Yes the flash is prominently on the front of the beret. The hole for the head is about 6.5 inches in diameter. The depth of the hat is about 2.5 inches. It doesn't seem deep enough to wear off to the side. It has a bow on the back. photo 20190130_093018.jpg Yes there should be a database, not sure why this has not been done before.
