ROSEVILLE A security guard was fired from a Roseville Best Buy after he tackled a suspect fleeing from deputies last week.
Surveillance footage, taken by the family of Tyler, the former Best Buy security guard, shows Placer County deputies chasing a suspect through a Roseville shopping plaza.
There was a guy who walked by and when he got by his car, a bunch of undercover sheriffs came over to arrest him, said Tyler.
Tyler, an Army veteran, who only wanted to be referred to by his first name, was working at the Roseville Best Buy when he noticed a man, identified as 35-year-old Timothy Trujillo, knocking down a deputy.
When they confronted him, the man punched one of the detectives and tried to run off, thats when the security guard tackled the man, preventing him from escaping, said Lt. Andrew Scott, spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
He started running past me and I thought I was doing the right thing by stopping him, Tyler added.
Eventually, deputies were able to arrest Trujillo.
But Tyler says his good deed was quickly overshadowed when he went back inside his job.
I understood that when I went back in there I was going to get into some type of trouble because Best Buy policy says we arent supposed to touch anybody, he stated.
One week later, Tyler says he was given the pink slip.
My manager called me in and said corporate decided to let me go because I used excessive force and it was against Best Buys policy to intervene, Tyler said.
A Best Buy representative issued a statement in response saying, Our policy is clear, employees are not to chase potential criminals outside of the store. Chasing an individual in the parking lot creates a safety risk that isnt worth taking, regardless of how noble an employees intention is.
Tyler says he has no hard feelings toward his former employer. Hes just happy knowing he helped put a criminal behind bars.
Seemed like it was the right thing, like I said it was someone running from the cops, seemed like the logical thing to do, Tyler said.
Trujillo is facing several charges including assault, drug possession, and burglary.
Tyler says hes looking forward to starting college in April.
I (and others) moved on from that to the reason that Best Buy gave for firing the security guard. Best Buy said it's their policy to not go outside of the store (which the guard did, regardless of whose thief he apprehended).
Based on their stated reason, it puts into question why they even have a security guard. I extended that to suggest that all of their "smart" security measures are right at the door, but once the person gets through the door no number of alarms will stop them from taking the merchandise, if their security guard is not allowed to exit the store.

What is the purpose of having an Army vet for a security guard?!
SICK TO DEATH of CORPORATE SELLOUTS.
Worst Buy is another place to BUY NOTHING, EVER!
Looking forward EVEN MORE now to seeing the local store close.
For now we’ll tolerate Amazon .. we will get to laugh at their demise in a few years.
Then what is the purpose of having a security guard?
***********
This event occurred outside in the parking lot not inside the
Best Buy store. The article is unclear as to which store the
felon stole from but it doesn’t appear to be Best Buy.
“In your ‘what if’ scenario, the suspect kills a cop which means he would have no problem killing some random security guard. A citizen has no obligation to intervene in a major felony involving a weapon.”
Indeed, no obligation, but if he decides to act and bravely takes that risk he is a good man willing to take risks for the protection of others. That sort of character is too often beat out of young men. Being a sheep-dog is no longer allowed (hence his firing), but being a sheep is.
I blame lawyers and SJW.
I would like to encourage feral youths to clean out Dicks. They deserve what they get for many reasons.
From one soldier to another, thanks Tyler. Good job. And Best Buy is no longer on my list of shopping sites. See ya.
Was he wearing a Best Buy security uniform or one from a contracting security firm?
The policy covers “potential” criminals. The man punched a police detective and was an “actual” criminal, witnessed first-hand. Cowardly beyond words. Thank the million+ ambulance chasing attorneys in this country destroying us from the inside.
Concur.
No good deed goes unpunished? (In this life anyway.)
Don’t know but it was at least a yellow top. But regardless
their policy about the event was violated thus the removal.
It’s absolutely lawyers! If you take actions against a perp, you will be sued by the perp if your actions produce an injury to the criminal. Everything always leads back to lawyers. Sure, there are some good ones out there, but the bad ones sure make it difficult to respect the profession.
Best Buy makes sure that their paying customers don’t steal anything. After you go through the checkout, you walk 10 feet and some other “employee” has to check your purchase and receipt. What is that all about?
Same as Sam’s and Costco.....................
I believe you. They make you feel like a criminal when leaving the place. Why don’t they just do a pat down to make sure you haven’t stolen anything?
I always seem to get stuck behind a person with 53 items and two carts.................and the receipt checker is 70+ years old...............
Ha! I know what you mean. The worst cashiers are men. I’m a man, so I’m not discriminating. If I get into a check out line with a man cashier, I tell the wife, we’re moving to another line.
As per cashiers, we always seem to get the ‘trainee’ line...............
Yeah, nowadays there's more lawyers then criminals.. No, wait... They may be the same thing.. :)
