The North Carolina 3-year-old who vanished from his grandmothers backyard earlier this week said he spent his two days in the woods with a friendly bear.
Casey Lynn Hathaway was found alive just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, bringing an emergency two-day search for the missing toddler to a close. Rescue workers were following up on a tip about a crying child when they discovered Casey about 40 or 50 yards into a wooded area, tangled up in some brush and calling out for his mother.
The boy had been missing since Tuesday, when he didnt come inside with the other children hed been playing with at his grandmothers house in Enrul, located about 100 miles southeast of Raleigh.
Caseys aunt, Breanna Hathaway in a Facebook post said her nephew was healthy, smiling and talking following his return late Thursday.
He said he hung out with a bear for two days, she wrote. God sent him a friend to keep him safe. God is a good God. Miracles do happen.

According to google:
It is a common misconception that bears hibernate during the winter. While bears tend to slow down during the winter, they are not true hibernators. Black bears, Grizzly bears and Brown bears do go into a deep sleep during the winter months, known as torpor.
Hebrews 13:2 “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
A different context but the point is that God’s angels exist and are there to interact and help humans in a way that we’ll never actually know...
I vote for a dog too.
That would be dog-like behavior to hang around with a friendly human or vulnerable child. Dogs in the area would be likely to detect him and check him out.
Also in NC it’s very rarely cold enough to have to hibernate. Our temps in the winter can range from the teens to the 60’s.
Also, a bear cub crying sounds astonishingly like a human child crying. I had that experience once near a place where one was in captivity at a facility that had college mascots. They had a new one and were teaching it to be able to sleep alone for god knows what reason.
From where I was, 2 blocks away, late one night I “heard” a baby screaming outside. It was enough to get me out of the house and go follow the sound. I was astonished when it lead to the bear enclosure. There that little cub was climbed halfway up the fence, wanting attention.
Animals are weird. It might be very possible that a bear heard the kid, thought it sounded like a cub, sniffed him and left. They someones kill you and other times just get curious. Sometimes they kill cubs even, so who knows?
But a point of order, do bears in that part of the country hibernate? It is January after all?
I believe the word you are looking for is torpor.
“The bear just wasnt hungry. NO, Im not being insensitive. Bears are not to be trusted. They are not warm and fuzzy. They are not your friends! No, it wasnt a gift from God.”
They are unpredictable. In that film “Grizzly Man” that nutty guy was in and around them. He even walked up and touched one right on the nose. Them tolerating him went on for months. Then one night, one decided to eat him.
Um, the empathy in that are have been digging into the 20-30s at night. Does anyone here really believe the child survived for two nights on his own? Im thinking someone took him and then let him go, back in his area, before the perp was found or the perp did something unforgivable.
Empathy=temps and digging=dipping

600 people on line, with 6 feet between them and 2 feet for the space they occupy is a search swath nearly a mile wide. That was the old technique up until the 1970s. That “lawnmower” would have found him in the time it would take them to walk a mile or two, and then turn back on the swath right beside it.
But now professional teams cannot stand “volunteers” and find a million ways to get them “out of the way”.
Lucky for the bear the kid didnt kill him. After all, Davy Crockett killed him a bear when he was only three!! It must be true because I saw it on TV in the 1950s!!
Born on a mountain top in Tennessee
greenest state in the land of the free
raised in the woods so he knew ev’ry tree
kilt him a be ‘are when he was only three
Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier!
That happens a lot. Check out author David Paulines work missing 411 where he documents cases of people being found in places that have been thoroughly searched.
It wasnt a bear it was a Squatch. Missing 411.
