Today’s Cryptogram

Today’s Cryptogram

Y AEHIQGLBHZ AFVQGIG FQ SVLHQILL HL SIXXIE XBYQ Y SVLHQILL AFVQGIG FQ AEHIQGLBHZ. MFBQ G. EFRTIAIUUIE

This is another challenging cryptogram, but worth the effort. Would be interested in the group's experience with the meaning of the quote.

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications, unfortunately they are copyrighted so we can't use them here. So, we're just going to make up our own.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter.

For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.

Send me a private reply if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

If you're just starting out on these, be patient, as you'll be proficient in no time.

Solving the puzzle under 8 minutes is good, under 6 very good, under 4 excellent and under two "you're a pro!"

Those of you looking for an added challenge can try to solve one sentence at a time, i.e. solve the entire first line, then go to the second line etc.

If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it to Hal’s Helper below:

It’s easier to work on the puzzle without having to use your pencil.

Let me know if you want on or off our Cryptogram Ping List, (currently at 40!)

Solution to our last puzzle:

If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need. Cicero

We had some interesting comments on yesterday's quotation. Many of you really liked it. The most interesting came from scrabblehack who writes:

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need. Cicero.

Is different if you look at the Latin.

http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/cicero/

si hortum in bibliotheca habes, deerit nihil.

Which is actually

“If you have a garden in your library, nothing will be lacking.” Without context, one might think it to mean “if you have a garden and a library,” you will have things to eat and not get bored, but the University of Chicago takes it as:

http://perseus.uchicago.edu/perseus-cgi/citequery3.pl?dbname=PerseusLatinTexts&getid=1&query=Cic.%20Fam.%209.4

Probably means (though it is a strange way of expressing it) a garden to sit and converse in, like philosophers in the Academy: the library being like Cicero’s Tusculan gymnasium, round a court containing shrubs, etc. There is a similar reference to Cicero’s villa at Cumae, Vol. i., p.253 (Q. Fr. 2.8).

I”d be interested in your idea of the quotation. Feel free to share your opinion in a private reply. I’ll share these tomorrow with the group.

Didn’t get to the part about timing, so that I don’t know. Pencil?! I used Word and replace which hopefully got me down to around 8 minutes at the most.

If there are any, look for the single letters first. There are only two words that I can think of in the English language they could be. Double letters at the end of a word are fairly limited.

Thank you for the fun. :)

So nice having that Hal’s Helper. I used to write these in ink on the local paper and my writing is SO HARD to read! LOL There was a guy at Ok State U while I was a student there, John Stanley, who worked the daily school paper crossword puzzle without reading the hints. They used the same words over and over and there was a pattern to the puzzles. We used to sit around on 4th floor, OSU student union, and drink 5 cent cups of coffee... FREE refills... and work the crossword puzzle. Now coffee is probably 5.00 a cup!

= = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Right on about the coffee.... USED to be the pattern etc that if you flipped it over it was the same grid....

(Before EVERYONE had a copier) I would make a copy of the puzzle, go out in public (same place) and have the clues to my left and the grid to my right and do the puzzle 'upside down'...

THEN LEAVE it so someone else would find it.... oh, yes NATURALLY in ink....

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE AN ARSE, MAY AS WELL BE A SMART ARSE...

About 7.....2.5 when I figured out the double endings..

How true a statement....like never lend more money to friends or family than you wish to ‘give’ away.

That was pretty easy. Double letters and 1 and 2 letter words.

Two minutes. I’m getting good at this. The double-lettered words helped, and of course any quote with a one word -etter gives a couple good starting points. I’d never heard this quote, but it certainly makes sense. And he would know!

Took me a couple of hours.

I admit that I don't focus just on this. Over the weekend, I have the TV on, browse other sights, etc.

But still, I never get it done in minutes.

I’m half way obsessed that I’m going to solve the daily quip, but it’s great if you knock it off in the first few minutes of the day....

Today’s shouldn’t be too bad, as it has repeating words, and some words that should stand out, like the 4th...It’s a six letter word that comes up at least once per week.
