So, Gillette, the razor and shaving conglomerate, has released a commercial that is either Oscar-worthy or the devils own butthole, depending on your view of masculinity.
This happened while I was home sick and by the time I dragged myself to a screen and actually watched the thing, it didnt seem as revolutionary or inspirational as it had been described. Mostly, it felt ad-spirational that weird sweet spot where a company wants to convince you that you can Mach-3 your way to gender equality. But still, Gillette was trying. Its time we acknowledge that brands, like ours, play a role in influencing culture, the company posted on its website, vowing to challenge gender expectations.
Sure. Praise be. But, from my sick bed, I had just one thought experiment for Gillette: Should an ad about toxic culture have included toxic women?
If you havent seen the commercial, heres a recap. In a series of vignettes, men harass women, and boys bully each other until a voice-over intones, We believe in the best in men. Then, suddenly, the vignettes have heroes: a man tells his friend that harassing is not cool, a father instructs two fighting boys, thats not how we treat each other.
The heroes of the commercial are men, the villains are also men, and women are present mostly as props. I appreciate why: the overarching message is that men can and should mentor other men. Its not a womans responsibility to avoid harassment; its the responsibility of men to not harass her. Women shouldnt have to educate men; men are capable of educating themselves.
But if were really going to talk about culture, then is there a way to acknowledge that culture is vast, insidious, with roots that go deep and end up producing some misogynist women?

it sounds like a great reason for men to stay single and to play the field but not let any of the other team get into a position to take his money in a divorce.
Multiple edge disposables tug my bead. What kind of blade would you recommend? I’ve been looking at Feathers.
Let’s talk about toxic journalists - and the damage they do to our country.
the road apple doesn't fall far from the horse's azz...
Let’s talk about toxic journalists - and the damage they do to our country. Monica Hesse would enjoy and ad like that Gillette... so do it.
Picked up a Harry’s kit today, but I did glance at a safety razor. My grandfather used one for many years. :)
I was just wondering: When the men on the Titanic gave the highest priority to women and children for the lifeboats, was that a case of toxic masculinity?
Yeah, that ad was horrible. Ive been on the suicide hotline for days. Going to seek counseling next week.
I guess if a woman identifies as a man then it can affect her, er, him, er, it.
I don’t believe this woman should make another effort at producing thought.
My father used a safety razor. I never did.
It arrives Saturday.
This journalist lost me at devils own butthole.
There is no toxic masculinity. There is toxic feminazism.
Holy moly... I just found out what gender fluid was 2 weeks ago, which led me surmise that Tranny fluid wasn’t actually for transmissions. Now this!

Blinker fluid.
to them toxic masculinity is someone who rescues them from an attacker because he is a man..the light is not shining on them, they think all was so fair before..no clue at all
Uh?....The message:
Black men good! White men bad!
I am reminded of Orwell's Animal Farm. ( Oink!)
Hm?...Monica doesn't know how to use her smart phone while sick? Really?
Especially them toxic hateful "feminists" who haven't a clue what "feminine" means...they are denying themselves of so much that it is rotting their brains.
