It seems that the fake news keeps telling us that RBG is just fine and is able to do what her job requires of her. I'm curious, how many of you know 85 year old who would be capable of doing the job of listening to Legal arguments and going through legal documents?
My grandma was very healthy and active at age 85, although I still cannot imagine her doing that job.
But not only is she super old, she has just allegedly gone through broken ribs and lung cancer removal. I cannot think of many 30 year olds that could come back to work quickly after that.
I know there are a lot of senior citizens here, so your Insight will be a lot better than mine. What are your thoughts of having this 85 year old woman on the bench?
Your grandmother is not in league with Beelzebub.
Byrd-———think aoc. Scary huh?
My mom is 85 and very healthy, and if this was her field she still could do it.
My mother is 87 and in as good of health as you could reasonably expect for someone of her age. I think she could handle the rigors of being a Supreme Court justice for a short time but not for a full court term. On the other hand, I can assure you that any decision my mother rendered would be far, far better than what RBG would render.
I personally know an 85-year-old man and his 80-year-old wife... Both are active, self sufficient, and vociferous MAGA supporters...
The only thing they don’t do is shovel snow... Gave that up 3-years ago...
When the weather is warm, they can often be seen in their Ranger bass boat fishing a tidal river (Potomac, Rappahannok, James, Chickahominy) or Currituck Sound ...
yes, there are many seniors who still are on top of the world..
BUT NOT MOST....
its all very much the egotistical attitude that the privileged have...that they should stay in power and wealth no matter that their bodies are weak and frail and their minds consumed on bodily functions more than anything else...
just like the old dudes taking viagra......just stop thinking you're 25 yrs old....
let nature take its course...
She used to but she probably felt bad about shaming the young journalists who could barely keep up with her. The legends of her grueling workouts was one of the early attempts to deify RBG.
I told you!
I can drive just fine! Now mind your own business!
Really? I followed you the other day and you were all over the road. LOL!
It’s irrelevant, actually. It’s a lifetime appointment.
All the R’s could really do is impeach her for mental/physical incompetency; but that would set off a firestorm the likes of which we’ve never seen; the votes aren’t there, and it would ultimately be counterproductive.
When lifetime appointments were written into the Constitution, the average life expectancy (conditional on surviving early childhood) was mid 50's, as opposed to 80's today. This meant that Supreme Court judges would usually serve for about 10 years as opposed to a quarter or a third of a century, and that when they died, they were usually not mentally and physically decrepit for years prior to their death. Neither is true today.
I would be ok with a 25 year term limit. Most would be appointed at an age of not much past 50 if not younger. So someone would leave the court in most cases around 75 to 80 not unreasonable in today’s world. Or just have a 75 year age limit.
He's never had cancer so I can't say how RBG does it.
What you propose sounds reasonable too. The bottom line is that we need some kind of age and term limits for Supreme Court justices (incidentally, I’m all in favor of term limits for Senators and Congressmen as well. If a President is limited to 2 full terms, I don’t see why a two-term limit of 12 years shouldn’t apply to Senators).
My mom could have done so until about 88, had she been educated for the task. She was mentally alert until a few weeks before she passed at 95, but at 88-89 she started having tremors similar to Parkinson’s syndrome and was not comfortable enough to concentrate for long.
Oral arguments should be videotaped for that purpose.
No cameras allowed in the SCOTUS. Tradition...................
She’s in the last two minutes of the 4th qtr. Anyone who thinks she is making decisions, might be in the market to buy a bridge.
I agree on House and Senate term limits, again I could live with them being longer than most proposals, say 10-12 terms for House, and 3-4 terms for Senate. That forces people out of at least that part of national politics after 20 or so years. I have seen to many examples of what Washington does to a person after too many years there, plus we just plain need “new blood” more often.
