Disney CEO Bob Iger’s Pay Rises 80% To $65.7 Million

Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger saw his pay rise to $65.7 million, an 80% increase over a year ago, according to documents filed today with the SEC.

The compensation reflects the generous stock package Iger was awarded as incentive to remain with the company past his planned retirement date, and lead Disney through its acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox’s film and television assets.

Iger earned a salary of nearly $2.9 million, up from $2.5 million a year ago. He collected options worth $8.3 million and non-equity compensation of $18 million.

But the biggest chunk of Iger’s compensation came from the stock award connected to the Fox deal, which was valued at $35.35 million. Disney notes that the stock ultimately could be worth as much as $149.6 million if the acquisition wins regulatory approval and closes, and he achieves the highest level of performance.

In 2017, Iger earned $36.3 million in total compensation.

Today’s filing spelled out compensation for other executives.

General Counsel Alan Braverman earned a total salary of $10.4 million in 2018; CFO Christine McCarthy earned $11.8 million; Chairman of Direct to Consumer, Kevin Mayer, earned $11.6 million; Chief Human Resources Officer Jayne Parker brought in $6.8 million and Chief Communications Officer Zenia Mucha earned $5.1 million.

So now we know why Disney parks doubled their ticket prices for two years in a row.

When you can list one of the accomplishments of your time as managing to make Star Wars suck worse than The Star Wars Holiday Special did you’ve earned ... something.

As a Disney shareholder, I’m okay with this. Iger has done a pretty good job, so pay the man. Disney is absolutely crushing it at the box office. All the various superhero flicks, remakes, CGI things, Star Wars, etc. aren’t my cup of tea personally, but they’re apparently what the public wants. Ditto the theme parks. Haven’t been to one in nearly 30 years, but from what I understand, many people absolutely can’t get enough of the places. Additionally, the price increases that some here are complaining about have as much to do with reducing overcrowding and long lines as raising revenue. In any case, if you have a problem with the prices, easy solution... don’t go.

I think they should remake some of the cartoon movies to make them lgbt friendly. Sleeping beauty could be a guy who awakes when his prince kisses him. Stuff like that.

You sure about that? Solo and The Last Jedi bombed badly, and A Wrinkle in Time did very poorly in the box office. Heck, the TV series Star Wars Resistance apparently got lots of downvotes for its teaser trailer. And that’s not even getting into how sales were down at Walt Disney World thanks largely to Gay Days based on what Florida Family Association reported. And speaking of gays, his promotion via ABC of When We Rise regarding the gay movement managed to decrease ABC’s viewability to being just tied with the CW (and far below FOX, CBS, and NBC), and also using the Disney Fan Club in a cynical attempt at dissuading criticism (and even THEY ended up turning against him), thus earning him a dock in pay. If anything, all of those bits would have been more than enough for me to demand for him to be fired if I had been a shareholder. It’s called the bottom line.

Besides, I know a few Disney shareholders like Justin Danhof and Tom Borelli who made no attempt at hiding their contempt to Iger for several of his actions, including pushing a far-left bias on ABC (and his cowardly denying it), his shelving Path to 9/11, his interfering on Jemele Hill’s behalf when she was about to get fired by ESPN for needlessly bashing Trump on the air, among other things.

I'm not going to defend theme park Gay Days, as I oppose the idea. Solo was a bomb, but Last Jedi was highly profitable. Critics and many fans trashed it but it did gangbusters box office. See:
Box Office: Why 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Is Still A Big Win For Disney https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2018/01/28/why-star-wars-the-last-jedi-with-just-1-3b-worldwide-is-still-a-win-for-disney/#290afcf6f2d3

In any case, Disney had 6 of the Top 10 grossing movies last year. By any metric, that's incredible. They look to repeat that this year with the usual stable of animated, Star Wars and superhero flicks. As I said, they're not my cup of tea, but they're what the public wants.

Interestingly, by company policy Iger can ONLY travel by private plane. That's why Disney has a fleet of private jets based at Van Nuys Airport in the central part of the San Fernando Valley.

I will bet you that Walt Disney is spinning in his grave over the “people” who have taken over his company.

Actually, Last Jedi DID bomb at the box office, bombed big enough that China was repulsed by it (and believe me, considering Hollywood considers China to be more valuable in terms of marketshare than even its own country of America, that’s saying something), and apparently did very badly enough that JJ Abrams apparently decided to just insinuate that the audience was “afraid of women”, do the exact same crap that the 2016 Ghostbusters Remake stars tried to do. https://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2018/02/18/j-j-abrams-last-jedi-critics-felt-threatened-women/

And don’t get me started on how Star Wars Resistance was outright hated by most people, getting a LOT of downvotes for its teaser on YouTube alone. Or, for that matter, the bomb that was A Wrinkle in Time. And having ABC basically tie with the CW when originally it competed with CBS and NBC, to say little about FOX, isn’t what I would call a success, especially not when that was single-handedly caused by “When We Rise”, a far-left gay propaganda schlockumentary. Or, heck, how people reacted to Roseanne being cancelled, or how people reacted to ESPN basically not firing Jemele Hill.
