Watch 2 adorably clueless teens, 17, baffled by a rotary phone
Fox News ^ | 1-9-19 | Frank Miles

Kids today know plenty, whether it's how to become a social media star on YouTube or how to navigate Snapchat. (It's a snap.) And at every step, their cellphones are close at hand, part extra appendage, part security blanket.

But cellphones are one thing.

And rotary dial models, quite another.

Two adorably clueless 17-year-olds, Jake and Kyle Bumstead of Illinois, got four minutes to dial a number on a rotary phone. It was their first time using such a relic from a bygone age.

Imagine asking an English speaker to parse some Egyptian hieroglyphs.

In this case, it took the pair more than a minute simply to recognize that Step 1 involved lifting the receiver.

I knew of a person circa early 90s with a bachelor degree in accounting that couldn’t either.

Since I’m on a roll, let me give you an example of an evil order, and a stupid order (follow-up to my post #56).

An evil order: I once was given a stack of college scholarship forms for my homeroom. I was told to give them out to minority students only. To hell with that. I ignored that order. My homeroom students - black and white - were mainly poor kids. So everyone got a form. Luckily I never got in trouble for that.

A stupid order: Do not score a test less than 50% (I’m not kidding here). So if a student does nothing on a test, you must give him 50 points. Very stupid. And very counterproductive. But it’s not a hill to die on. So 50% it is.

I would love to have a rotary phone again, if only for nostalgic reasons.

But nowadays, we need an internet phone to connect with our internet service.

It’s a stupid headline, especially considering it has a male name as author. They were mildly amusing, not adorable. Now, if it’s a baby animal dialing the phone...

Well, once you learn how to use something, you don’t forget.

These two teens probably will never forget their rotary phone lesson. lol

I thought about that... But at this point the thread is about to slide off. Don’t want to bother them if the thread is about done anyways. It was a learning experience I will have to adjust on my end next time. :)

How about short division? They taught that in the Catholic school I went too in the third grade to save paper. early 1960’s

Though calculators were coming into being....my college math professor only allowed slide rulers. Best math teacher I ever had.

Sounds socially dividing. Poor kids only get short division while rich kids get long division.

They’ll never know the satisfaction of slamming that receiver down when ticked off and ending the call

“They are taught to rely on calculators, and not on their brains”

I trust my eyes and brain much more than my fingers on a tiny keyboard. I’m not the greatest at math, but I can usually tell if I’m getting an incorrect answer on a calculator

How can people make sure their kids get ehucated? Tell them to ignore the crap they’re taught at school and teach their kids the correct way themselves?

The cellphone has unfortunately eliminated a lot of opportunities for drama.

It’s possible to dial angrily. “I’m calling your wife right now!” Dial, dial, dial . . .

Not to mention slamming the receiver down.

No parallel in cellphones. The person just quietly disappears and you are talking to yourself.

“But landlines are becoming a thing of the past.”

I won’t give ours up because we have so many power outages.
