Today's Cryptogram
1/07/2019 | Nikos1121

Today's Cryptogram:

DYK QKRWKD LJ SKDDZAS GYKGX ZQ SKDDZAS QDGWDKX. NGWB DFGZA

No hint as I think today's might be a bit easier than the past few. Look for the three letter suffix and try to locate the "T" and "E" and you'll be off to the races. Anything under 6 minutes is good, but I think we'll have some people breaking 4 minutes today.

Please, post your times, but do not post the answers in "comments," but you can private reply the answer to me.

Also, please share any tips on how you solve this or any other cryptograms.

Our last puzzle:

FAILURE WILL NEVER OVERTAKE ME IF MY DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED IS STRONG ENOUGH. OG MANDINO

Several of you found this one challenging. Some picked up on the most frequent crypto letter and that gave you the "E."

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications, unfortunately they are copyrighted so we can't use them here. So, we're just going to make up our own.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter.

For example:

AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram)

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.

If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it here:

It’s easier to work on it without having to use your pencil.

Let me know if you want on or off our Cryptogram Ping List.

It took me longer than it should have for me to get this one. Nice, and thank you. Do you have a ping group?

Took me 10 minutes, but I was distracted (excuses, excuses). Considering I haven’t done one of these in 30 years, I’ll be happy with my 10 minute score. I like the reminder that this exercise is good for brain function. Thanks.

Easy Peasy this morning. 2 1/2 min.
Glad for an easy one, because some of the last ones kicked my butt

Got the name first and from there the rest was easy. Took a stab at the name.

Thank you for warning me that these are very addictive.

I had never done one before but tried this because you said it was easy. Of course, I didn’t find it easy but did find it interesting. I may be hooked.

Is there a place on the internet that describes various strategies? I did the obvious ones, e.g., common two and three letter words - is, of and the. Figuring out the -ing word solved it for me. There must be some tried and true strategies. Any suggestions?

We have some pros here, that I've encouraged to give us some tips. You learn a lot from just doing. Here are a few of mine. 1. It's good to know the frequency of letter usage. For the written word it's: Especially E, T, A, O, I, N 2. If the CG is grammatically correct, then a "comma" must be followed by "and" "but" "or" and I will try to comply with that. 3. If you see a series of the 3 letters is seen again with a 4th letter added, then you think "The" and "They" and "You" and "Your" etc. 4. Always look for the repeating 3 letter suffix, which will usually be "ing" a repeating 4 letter can be "tion" 5. I think if you can't get started use the Hal Helper http://www.hjkeen.net/htoys/cryptogm.htm Shall I add you to our CG Ping List?

Thank you.

I think I did some of your tips already, but just hadn’t verbalized them. I knew the e and the t frequency and figured out the -ing. You’re right - this just might become addictive.

Yes, I don’t think anyone really get’s into the science of this. You jst get in the habit of slugging thru them each day, preferably with someone else too, and within a couple weeks, they tend to come easy.
