Doctor Who's much-hyped New Year's special is reportedly the lowest-rated episode of the show since it returned with new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.
The series - which returned on October 7 2018 for its 11th [reboot] season - concluded on December 9, with an audience of 6.65 million; but the January 1 special, which saw the infamous Daleks return to the show, haemorrhaged a massive 1.5 million viewers.
Estimated overnight figures, according to doctorwhonews, report that the tally of viewers was 5.15 million on New Year's Day.

A couple of observations from a guy who wore his Dalek t-shirt and drank from his Dr. Who coffee mug on New Year’s Day...
I know it is tradition to hate the new Doctor while pining for the previous one, but I never warmed to Capaldi and Whittaker is worse. Not that she isn’t a fine actress, but I don’t buy that her character has been male for centuries and now finds himself living as a woman. Until Capaldi, I could always see a bit of the previous Doctor in the present one. I saw no Matt Smith in Capaldi and I see none of the previous Doctors in Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor portrayal.
The SJW crap of this season has been heavy handed and changed Doctor Who from “gotta see it” to “maybe if I get around to it” for me.
The 3 companion bit is not working. Besides the just general confusion it brings and distracts from the story line, did they have to have a gay Muslim woman, a disabled young black man, and an old white guy who goes about being perpetually confused?
Moving the Christmas Special to a New Year’s Day Special smacks of lefties not being comfortable with the subtle religious overtones and at least secular veneration of the previous Christmas Specials. This one was so bad that you could tell that it had been written as a Christmas special and then they had gone back and drawn a line through Christmas and written in New Years every time it appeared in the script. The story had some minor plot points regarding how understaffed particular agencies were because of New Years, but it could have just as easily been because of Christmas, or Boxing Day, or the Queen’s birthday.
SPOILERS (not so much if you have read anything about this episode)
Bringing back the Daleks (or more accurately, one really old, pitiful Dalek) was not the kind of earth shattering revelation, or a major advancing of an over arching plot, we have come to expect from these special episodes. It was drawn out, disappointing and derivative of many other science fiction story lines - ancient enemy unearthed, alien taking a human host, authorities unable/unwilling to believe the heroes that an alien attack was imminent...been there, done that, lots of times.
Overall, really sad. As much of a fan that I am, I find myself hoping that the 13th Doctor is the end of the line.
Its the year 1550 but the Queens inner court has asian and black people all over the place.
Gay activity..?
Yes, theres that, too.
Yeah, I saw that over the holidays.
Yeah, like sure, Queen Elizabeth's main advisor was an African man, back in 1565. I'll buy that.
"Get 'WOKE' = go BROKE!"
All of the MILLIONS of now former die-hard Who fans couldn't care less.
Female doctor who is just ugh ... sorry.
The SJW crap of this season has been heavy handed and changed Doctor Who from gotta see it to maybe if I get around to it for me.
With Capaldi, Dr Who became maybe if I get around to it, with the female its forgetaboutit entirely.
Have all the episodes from the 3rd Doctor to Capaldi to watch - now on the 4th Doctor in The Androids of Tara with the beautiful (now sadly passed) Mary Tamm.
Agreed.
You are correct sir! The last season of Capaldi was unwatchable and I missed it all. Billie (sp?) was unlikable in the extreme. I pretty much stopped once Clara died, or whatever.
The writing for the last Doctor was terrible, so much so, my wife and I gave up on the series during his first season. From what I was told by others still watching, it got much worse.
The new female doctor is a pandering stunt, and was guaranteed to be SJW from the start. Every single person I know that was still watching has bailed on the show this season. The writing is terrible and the female doctor is a stupid idea guaranteed to push a more heavy handed SJW theme.
All they had to do was bring back Ramona, a legitimate female Time Lord.
I was always disappointed that they did not do more with her.
And for legacy you can not do better then the lady who is the fifth Doctor's daughter and the eleventh doctor's wife in real life.
I thought the bit about the call center and UNIT not being available was rather funny. It’d be what I’d expect from the UK bureaucracy.
The rest was so so at best.
I thought that the Punjab episode was really good, as was the temporary universe one.
Episodes 6,7,8 and 9 were very good. Episode 10 was a clunker. And it sounds like this was as well.
Sesson 9, I think was the best of the series. I liked Season 8 as well, with a darker more dangorus Doctor. Everything somce Clara has been blah.
