Doctor Who's much-hyped New Year's special is reportedly the lowest-rated episode of the show since it returned with new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.
The series - which returned on October 7 2018 for its 11th [reboot] season - concluded on December 9, with an audience of 6.65 million; but the January 1 special, which saw the infamous Daleks return to the show, haemorrhaged a massive 1.5 million viewers.
Estimated overnight figures, according to doctorwhonews, report that the tally of viewers was 5.15 million on New Year's Day.

Didn’t they come out with a female Doctor? Havent followed it since 4 years ago or so.
Well done, Steven Moffat. Making “The Curse of Fatal Death” (a parody) writ large over the reboot series backfired on you, didn’t it.
It was an ok episode. The first several episodes were full of PC and SJW propaganda, practically unwatchable. Get woke, go broke....
Didnt they come out with a female Doctor?
Yes but the writing is killing it a lot more than a Female Doctor
I get that a lot of people don’t like the female Doctor, but how long can the show be expected to last and still be good quality? I hve not watched in since I was in college in the mid to late 1970’s. Shouldn’t it be suffering from terminal jumping of the shark by now?
Its not the female doctor its the writing, its gone full SJW propaganda. Last episode I watched featured white people helping poor Rosa Parks refuse to move to the back of the bus. Everybody knows black people cant do anything without white people helping./s
I have a Tom Baker 4th Doctor scarf. It’s 12 feet long. Every time I wear it, I get positive comments, even from those who have never heard of Doctor Who.
yep. Having a female doctor is cool. Jodie is doing a good job with what she’s been given. It’s the writing. The Rosa episode was something, but the man having a baby episode was really stupid. It’s like the writers were given a list of agenda items and were told to create stories around them, instead of starting with good stories in the first place.
Nice!
Of course it has...
The gender bending nonsense was a cheap pandering to get press... but the writing has been even worse than it was before this little pandering fiasco.
So, true to form, get a big pop for the press around now the doctor is a woman, and the feministas who really never liked DR WHO anyway, will drain away after their SJW group think wears off, and you will be left with the true audience who has been shrinking not because the doctor has a penis, but because the WRITING has been CRAP and getting crappier for a long long time now...
So instead of actually fixing the problem, which is poor writing, you just gender bend it and then put even worse writing in place full of PC crapola, and you wind up with the ratings at, and when its all said and done, even BELOW where it was before you pulled the little stupid PC stunt... because the new “attracted” viewers by the gender bending were never going to stick around, and the core audience saw right through your nonsense, and doesn’t tune in to be lectured about whatever stupid left wing garbage cause dejure they want to opine about this week, ....
Last Season was ABYSMAL... this season is even worse... Last season we were forced to deal with a completely unrelatable companion, but hey she was a black lesbian, so ooo aren’t we all woke.... Doesn’t matter that the COMPANION is the most critical person to the Dr Who Dynamic... and the writing was in continual decline as well.
This year they just further double down on the nonsense. The writing is even poorer, and more preachy, and while I don’t blame the actors(resses) they are doing what they are asked to do, the reality is, a cheap pandering, particularly to a group of people who DON’T WATCH YOUR SHOW AND NEVER HAVE, is a STUPID move.
These girls/women all clamoring its time for a female time lord... when in fact any real fan of the show knows there had been some already... They had already gender bent the Master... and the Doctor’s daughter.. and has always had female leads that were more than capable... The whole thing was just stupid.. These women were NEVER going to watch the show, other than the OOO its a woman doctor... they would tune in for a week or two and go away because they had NEVER watched it before.. and didn’t like sci fi.. etc.
The reality is, had they actually fixed the UNDERLYING problem, which was piss poor and every worse WRITING, a cheap pandering might have helped boost things, but when you just offer the pandering, but don’t address the underlying problem and DOUBLE DOWN on things that are detrimental to the show, you wind up in the crap.
I am sure the fact it was a New Years special instead of a Christmas Special this year, probably didn’t help either.
Mixed bag at best.
I quit watching when I found myself rooting for the guys with the toilet plungers.
Seemed like moving the special to New Years was a slam at Christianity, but I could just be taking it the wrong way. The other gripe I have is that that appear be severly marginalizing whites. The UK is still mostly white (more so than the USA) yet there are rarely any white/white relationships. They only show mixed race couples now (unless they are two gay white men)
Brit film, Mary Queen of Scots:
It’s the year 1550 but the Queen’s inner court has asian and black people all over the place.
Gay activity..?
Yes, there’s that, too.
Isn’t that nice..?
The writing is even worse this year than ever.. and its been bad for along time.. and the Rosa episode was PURE pandering crapola....
Lets just throw some time traveler we know nothing about, no back story, no nothing, but toss him in there trying to stop Rosa Parks (who is completely misrepresented as are all the civil rights leaders in the episode from their historical realities.. which is fine, its fantasy.. ) who must be driven, we assume by racism, to stop her from not moving... we’ll make every white character as 1 dimensional as we can, and create a “story” with all the depth of a PETE THE CAT children’s book.
Oh and BTW whatever group or org this guy was part of, never mentioned before, foreshadowed, or mentioned again in the whole season...
Absolutely one of the WORST episodes EVER... but it hit all the WOKE notes, so it’ll get praised.
I have no problem with the premise of the episode, but the execution and writing was CHILDISH at best..... The Partition Day Episode was just as stupidly WOKE, but even it had better overall writing, but not by much.
DR Who’s problem has been, honestly, Russle T Davies was, a very strong writer, and they haven’t had consistently good writing since he left the show.. Yes he pandered and made sure every episode had a sodomite in it, and you knew it, no matter how irrelevant the character was the main storyline, let alone why we needed to know they were homosexual, but at least he could WRITE... Moffat has has written some classic episodes, but his writing generally was not on par.. and the writing of the last many seasons has been down right atrocious.. which is why the ratings have continued to fall.
Until Dr Who deals with its real problem, which is poor writing, no amount of cheap pandering is going to reverse its ratings slide
LOL!!!
That Movie was probably the worst telling of Mary Queen of Scots story that Ive ever seen...and Ive seen many. Ridiculous on many levels, including, as you mention, bringing 21st century SJW and LBJTQ (or whatever the Hell the letters are) mores into 16th century Britain.
I kept yearning for that Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail scene where the King suddenly throws the weakling Prince’s startled lover out the window...
Well broadcasting it New Years night, vs Christmas Night I am sure affected ratings to some extend, as more people are likely to be OUT on new years night, while most people are in on Christmas Evening...
But if you look at the general ratings for the season you will see they have been in steady decline.. not as low as last season yet, but at the decline rate they will be by next season.
The problem with DR Who for years has been the WRITING... and the continued desire to pander to left wing silliness combined with that hasn’t helped its cause.
Even this season, the Parks episode which hit all the PC notes, shows just how insanely weak the writing is... the villian? A never heard of before time traveler, who has decided “everything went wrong’ when Parks didn’t move her seat....
That’s all we know.. never head of him before, seen him or his organization before, no foreshadowing... and the group or situation was NEVER EVER mentioned before or since that episode...
So lets just stick a time traveling “racist” I guess to be a antagonist...
Yet, compare that with things like Bad Wolf... or Crack In Time... where you didn’t know what they were, but they were foreboding something...
I compare the current writing of Doctor who, and the Parks Episode especially to basically the level of “PETE THE CAT” children’s book writing... 1 dimensional characters, who if they are given a 2nd dimension at all its some PC related nonsense.... that offers NOTHING to them.
Until better writing and the end of preachiness returns to Dr Who, it will continue to decline in the ratings... This season, like last seasons, was just aweful, and honestly its been bad a lot longer than that. Its not the actors fault, its the writing.
The actress and the PC COMPANION TEAM, are doing what they are asked to do and doing it well... but the problem is what they are being asked to do is crap. The Billy actress did what she was asked to do, but what she was asked to do was slop....
GET BETTER WRITING, STOP PANDERING... and tell truly good stories, and then, and only then will fortunes change.
