The filmmaker Peter Jackson deserves more than an Oscar; he deserves a medal.
What the director of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies has done with his World War I documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old, is more than restore archival film; he has restored the humanity of men caught up in one of historys great cataclysms. This is an aesthetic achievement of the highest order, and a great service to history.

I saw this previewed yesterday while at the movies......but the two showing dates had already passed!
It was stunning. The work that Jackson and his team did was just remarkable.
Screw the oscars. Let them chose who they want, who cares? If the movie is good, go see it, or better yet, buy the DVD at Walmart when it hits the bargain bin. I have no intention of spending full price for any movie.
What’s really neat is staying after the movie is finished to watch Jackson discuss the production methods behind the film. One that I recall is how he got forensic lip readers to watch the slowed down footage and they were able to decipher what the men were saying.
When is it going into general release? It played on the 27th and all the venues were sold out.
Would love to see it. Why the limited showings?
Jackson made chop suey outta LOTR. Good films, missing half the book though with 50% made up filler.
I’m very interested in seeing this. I hope there are more showings.
XLNT movie,
The Man in the Trenches.
Hardly chop suey...Jackson did a masterful job of bring LOTR to the big screen...
Yes, a lot of books were left out. It would have taken three more movies to tell the whole trilogy...a lot of which would have been boring...
I was disappointed with him leaving out the very important end of the book when they come back to the shire...
Read that it is set for general release on Feb 1.
Will see it again in February. We went both days its was shown. We got to see the 3d version the first time, the regular version on Dec 27th.
It’s a great documentary.
Let’s see you make a better one then.
Same in my area, sold out two hours for the first one and an hour for the second one before show time. I so wanted to see it. And I want the DVD when it goes on sale.
That ending would have depressed left the audience disappointed.
Jackson made “chop suey” outta “The Hobbit.”
I saw it on the 27th. I got one of the last available tickets in the front row. It was very good. Might see it again when it gets more distribution in Feb.
Thanks!
I have seen this movie and it is an amazing technical achievement that gives meaning and substance to the British and colonial soldiers who fought and died in WWI. My one criticism is that while it chronologically details the lives of soldiers as they move from enlistment, training and placement in the trenches, it does so without context in terms of times, dates and places.
