'A kick in the stomach': massive GM layoffs leave workers distraught – and angry
The Guardian ^ | Dec 31, 2018 | Steven Greenhouse

There’s a sign outside the General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, that reads: “GM, We Invested in You. Now It’s Your Turn to Invest in US.”

Ever since the US’s largest car company’s immense assembly plant opened here 52 years ago, it has dominated this blue-collar town. Now GM workers here are furious that the automaker plans to idle – and perhaps permanently close – the plant.

GM stunned its workforce on 26 November, the Monday after Thanksgiving, by announcing it would cut roughly 14,000 jobs and idle five factories in North America, including the Lordstown plant, which employs 1,600 workers. One factor stoking the workers’ ire is that GM’s move came after American taxpayers rescued it from bankruptcy with a $49.5bn federal bailout in 2009.

While some have blamed Trump policies for the closure, or at least for his inability to stop them, it’s the company that workers hold most responsible.

The loans to GM began in 2008 under the Bush Administration.

Bush offered a "bridge loan" to GM which was a fraction of what GM had asked for in December of 2008. And that was it. At the time, Bush only had 6 weeks left to his term in office.

Bush's offer was a "LOAN!" The bailout, restructuring, etc. of GM, all occurred under Obama.

Nice try with your phony implication, but no cigar for you. Now go back under your rock.

Hello Government Motors unionistas.
A little simplistic history/business talk from an uneducated country hick.

Due to special circumstances, called World War 2 we had a leg up on the world.
The United States of America was the ONLY developed nation that emerged from that war with an intact transportation system.
The ONLY nation with a fully functional manufacturing base.
In fact, EVERY country in the world owed us war debts and we came out smelling like a big, beautiful rose as the only economy not to suffer devastating infrastructure damage.
The world was our oyster and we were Hungry!

In the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s we were exporting to the world as well as supplying our own domestic needs. I can remember you going on strike every few years demanding better pay, better health insurance and better retirement plans. You pointed to the company’s profits and howled like rabid dogs.
What you didn’t think about was the infrastructure...the plants and machinery you worked in and with. All you knew was you had the only horse in town and you rode it hard.
As a result prices remained high while quality dropped. Your work became sloppy and management cut corners to stay profitable.

But then things began to change.
The world rebuilt it’s manufacturing abilities, transportation systems and other economies began to emerge as players. They were small, but still players. You however didn’t notice.

Somewhere along the line those bit players emerged as stiff competition. They offered quality products at prices the American consumers found acceptable while you kept turning out the same crap at high prices. Soon the foreigners were beating you on price, quality, desirability of their products...you name it and they were eating your lunch and you refused to change.

So, here we are at the end of the line. You have been on life support since the Mulatto Menace handed our hard earned tax dollars to you.
Now there is a successful businessman in the Oval Office, not an America hating, self hating Mulatto Marxist.
Hopefully President Trump will come to the same conclusion I have...that it is time for Government Motors to die, so you can be replaced by something better.
I have little sympathy for the majority of your fellow employees because you have been part of the problem, never part of the solution.

Buhbye Government Motors.

Are you saying that the loans to GM began in 2008?

Thanks for pointing that out....i basically mean that the union priced itself out...with all of their activities...including those moronic rules you mentioned....i have heard it takes months to get everyone on board with a simple thing like a change in a bolt...talk about killing the goose which lays a golden egg

It’s Hillary who cannot drive. Or walk even, for that matter.

No on says they dont. Its a relatively narrow niche. Hybrids make far more sense for almost everyone though, best of both if you want a hybrid and dont haul heavy loads.

Why we need across the board imper tariffs. This will let domestic competition sort things out.

You cant compete with foreign cars cuz they have good technology and lower pay scales. The unions priced themselves out of the market. The rulers of GM pficed themselves out too. When others can do just as good as you and pay less...you outta a job. Too bad..

It's not that simple. Labor only accounts for 7-8% of a union built auto. Labor is not that much.

Not only that, but if a simple lightbulb goes out it will take at least 3 people to change it, and you’ll have to wait for them to all get there.

I will NEVER buy a product from Government Motors for as long as I live. The federal government already stole a bunch of my money and gave it to them and they were only to happy to be complicit in this theft. To hell with them.

I, too have owned several GM products & I think all but one were good-to-most excellent. They were all used cars/trucks. I currently drive one & it’s been good so far, so I hate to see this company going downhill. This is not to say that I think ALL their products are good; some sure seemed to be junk even as new vehicles. Their competitors had this problem many times as well. The better imported vehicles are just too expensive for me to buy, or even to own as a gift in some cases.

Loans are a whole different matter.

Obama took over GM, screwed over the creditors, closed successful dealerships (that were owned by republicans), and put a socialist in charge.

You DID notice all that in my sentences, didn’t you? I didn’t even mention loans.
