Soon it will be 50 years since Woodstock.
Not sure what surprises more: the fact that seminal cultural event is coming up on a half-century or that some of its featured acts are still touring. Wasnt rock n roll a youth movement? Didnt The Whos Pete Townshend write the immortal line Hope I die before I get old? and sing it at Woodstock?
Answers: Yes but not anymore. And yes Pete did, indeed, sing that line from My Generation on the third and last day of Woodstock on Aug. 17, 1969.
This week, The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts with Live Nation Concerts and INVNT announced a 50th anniversary edition of Woodstock for August 2019.

A thing to be grateful for
Why do all rock stars wind up looking like old lesbians?
I thought it was Eric Clapner.
Don't take the brown Viagra.
On the other hand Daltrey’s auto-biography is fantastic.
seems like yesterday...
Stringy hair and testosterone?
Yes its Eric Clapton. You can tell by the guitar hes playing. One of his favorite baby blue Fenders.
I’m being a Grinch here, but I HATED that whole era-——and it was the beginning of the downward slide that put us where we are today.
.
If I may ask (just out of curiosity), are you from "that generation" (generally speaking), or from a different generation? And, in that same vein, do you like any of the music from those years, or do you hate pretty much all of it? (Just curious.)
Welcome, my fellow Grinch. I watched that s*** going down through the late 1960’s and all of the sucky 70’s. You are totally correct. The real sierra began in 1968. We had slowdown during the Reagan years and now the Trump pause, but it’s like freeze-framing the Titanic.
Never cared for rock `music’ except the only purpose it ever served for me was watching girls dance to it.
I want to go. Here’s who is rumored to attend....
Daft Punk, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Ariana Grande, Coldplay, Phish, The Weeknd, Elton John, Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Pink, The Who, Santana, Zac Brown Band, Mumford & Sons, and The Chainsmokers
Crosby Stills Nash and Young WON’T be playing the 50th anniversary...
That icon of the “peace - love - crack/dope” generation hate each other.
the acid generation is now hooked on antacid
>>I just watched Santana’s Woodstock performance of “Soul Sacrifice” last night on youtube and it was/is smokin’ hot.
Amazing when you consider by their own admission they were tripping balls on acid and afraid of looking at the crowd, saying all they saw was a sea of hair and teeth.
Everything backstage was laced with acid (possibly in the ice).
The Who were dosed and not happy about it. They said it was the worst gig they ever had to play.
John Sebastian was tripping hard when he did his solo performance and nervous the whole time.
Jimi Hendrix was so polluted by drugs that it took an hour of trying to “send him another way” with more drugs before he was stable to perform. He was unable to appear on Dick Cavett that night.
Got to hand it to Sha Na Na standing up before tens of thousands of people, the last act of the final morning to go on just before Jimi Hendrix.
They opened and closed their set singing “Get A Job” to the unwashed hippies.
“Michael Lang, former Miamian and one of four organizers of 1969s Woodstock Music and Art Fair, wont be involved in the Bethel Woods Centers announced Woodstock 50th anniversary festival in August 2019.”
Best news yet. He was also behind Altamont and the 1999 Woodstock disasters.
I suspect that he was why radicals (Black Panthers and Abbie Hoffman) demanded $25,000 protection money from the other “partners” in Woodstock 1969. They got their extortion, they got free booth space, and still Abbie tried to hijack Pete Townsend’s mic mid-concert.
I also suspect he is why it was (always to be) a free festival. It wasn’t his money on the line.
And some anticapitalist arsons burned down the food vendor’s burger stand and other famous radicals tried to steal the rented movie camera gear by force.
“peace and love” not hardly. Mythmaking.
The Rolling Stones famously announced their farewll tour in 1981. 8 years ahead of the Who.
And Little Richard retired from rock and roll in 1958.
