It’s Over. Bethesda Has Nuked Fallout. (Vanity)
Opinion | 12/28/18 | Kudsman

For anyone unaware, Fallout 76 is an online only, pay to play MMO. It no longer is a single player RPG. This forever changes the Fallout experience for me. It’s dead.

I have grown up enjoying the Fallout world. Sadly, I will never wander the landscape of post apocalyptic West Virgina.

After waiting the almost a days time to download the 52 gig latest iteration, I finally got to play. WRONG. Online account must be paid for before “signing in”. Deleted that beyotch straight away. Adios Bethesda.

Dark Souls games (as well as Bloodbourne) are definitely masochistic. I can’t get through the first part of any of them. They are not like most games where they save your game as you reach checkpoints, and when you die, its back to the beginning. Yuck! Also, most games take pity on old people like me and when they see I am not up to the game, the game comes down to my level somewhat . . . nope, not these games.

I mostly like Call of Duty and Wolfenstein for offing Nazis, though I also like Doom. I’d like to see a new Quake. I enjoyed a game called Rage, and now I see they are going to release Rage II in May.

Borderlands is also a fun game.

The parts that resemble current West Virginia are strikingly similar to the actual West Virginia landscape;-) OSIH ...

"..Far from being adolescent, they are somehow able to hold on to that part of being a kid that made life so much fun.."

I've been gaming for a little over 10 years now. Started when I was 45ish as something to do at the coast in the winter when boat biz got real slow. A coupla weeks and a few destroyed controllers later(hint: it's cheaper to throw them into a pillow at the other end of the couch). I started having a great time with it once I learned the motions and got somewhat used to aiming my weapon with my right thumb(?!?). I like "first person" and OTS(over the shoulder) shooters with wide range "look around" motion (i.e. Rainbow 6, Gears, Future Soldier and to an extent COD except for it's "neckless" movement).

But one thing I liked early on is that for just a few bucks here are a pile of "new places and worlds" I could wander and play on. If I were to ever get disabled where I can't get around I can still "play" as long as I keep my hands, eyes and brains somewhat intact. It's been great for recovery from surgeries, extended inclement weather and such.

It may be a stretch, but I like options. The graphics in even some of the older games are still fun. My favorite is old Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 "Terrorist Hunt". Nice, short attention span blasting that can go on for a few minutes or hours. No story line. Offline. Free of other annoying humans and filled with wiseazz bots ta shoot at.(Why ya shootin the walls, bitch?!?)

.

chrissers- I imagine an apocolypse will look a lot like a mass divorce in WV. Trailers will be lost and mebbe fewer of the WV "State Flowers" (satellite dishes). d;^)

Fallout 76 has got to be the biggest case of bait and switch perpetrated upon a huge subculture in American history. Bethesda should be sued out of business. Maybe then other game developers will think twice before treating their consumers like garbage.

I'm 53 and still play all the Borderlands franchise as well as Left 4 Dead and Monster Hunter World. They are nice ways to unwind. And I also hold down a socially vital and highly demanding job caring for critically ill children. And if that didn't flip your lid- I also watch anime.

Sometimes my patients and I talk about games and anime. It's a great way to connect with a scared kid having a leukemia relapse.

There ya go.

I teach 5th grade science and my students are always shocked to find that I game. What surprises me is that they (10 and 11 year olds) often are playing M rated games....with their parents’ full knowledge.

It's not fast-paced like the games you mentioned, but if you like new worlds to explore, you might want to check out The Long Dark.

It's billed as a "survival simulator" where... well, you can check it out if you like! "The quiet apocalypse," indeed. It's one of the most interesting and engaging games I have ever played. My wife is decidedly not a gamer, but she will sometimes watch as I play, asking what I am doing, why, making suggestions, and so on.

Currently only $7.50 on Steam -- a steal.

Welcome to my reality. Bethesda killed Fallout for me when they made it a first-person shooter, which I can’t play because all modern FPS have uncanny-valley features that make me physically nauseous and inflict vertigo. Prior to their uncalled-for conversion from RPG to FPS, it was my single favorite game franchise.

Star Wars, Battletech, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and other once-preeminent franchises have also fallen victim to this. You thought you were getting the original universes, but nope, you get current-day SJW propaganda dressed up.

I hope they never do a Baldur’s Gate 3, because you just know the non-optional protagonist is going to spend the entire epic adventure figuring out his sexual orientation.

Yes! Daggerfall was a huge and complex game. It had Minecraft-level graphics (which were inmpressive back then), but the sheer size of the world and level of detail of story and lore has indeed been left in the past.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the closest thing lately to match that charm. Fantastic game that took weeks for me to get through.

Fallout in Bethesda?

I knew it — always thought my baldness was a result of growing up near the Nuclear Medicine facility at NIH.

Now confirmed.
