WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD DEC. 22, 2018
freerepublic | DEC. 22, 2018 | greeneyes

Posted on 12/22/2018 1:58:58 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Good for you. Take a little time off for fun and recreation.

I wanted to start building our back porch sun room this Spring. Hubby wants a Storage Shed with a basement under it.

I think I’m gonna have to concede - Maybe we can get both done. Not holding breath.

May go shopping for a fireplace insert tomorrow, since we need to visit the next town over to get some patio blocks from Lowes.

I must have married her sister.

I buy the gifts like a husband is "sposta" buy and she gives them back. One year, don't remember if that was the diamond ear ring or sapphire ring year, she handed it back and ordered a new kitchen sink, goose neck faucet, and a 1/2 hp garbage disposal.

This year, the first in nearly 30 years, I caught the one vague hint I was dropped. Im remodeling the storage room with a new storage system.

At least she knows what she wants and its not wasteful or foolish (like "correct" husband presents), so why not?

I have never had those kind. We have the native American tree. They sure are good, but difficult/messy to eat. The skin seems thinner than paper. The seeds are huge. The flesh is kinda like jelly not even as firm as jello.

Taste is Nirvana.

These must be hybrids as they are huge, soft when ripe and delicious. You do not want to eat them when they are still firm as the taste will turn them off for the rest of your life...

Same with ours-got to be ripe-talk about a pucker face!!!

IIRC, there are Asian varieties that get big like that. Don’t remember if they are hybrids, but quite possible.

Neither did I, after gardening this ground for over 35 years this past summer was the first time I grew Italian parsley.

Beautiful! Thanks I was the one who asked. I remember a lattice crust one that could have come out of a magazine. And I also remember a huge load of crabs at a market. Had never seen so many before.

Just took these of the parsley, flattened a bit because at times it is sitting under 6" of snow. Two pics taken of each side. I had a good yield out of that clump this summer and have a dried pint for the winter. I am hoping it just kicks back in for spring. That would be nice. Not bad for west Michigan, just east of Grand Rapids.

Mrs. Augie has her annual Christmas baking day scheduled for tomorrow. All that flour in the air will upset my sinuses, so I’m working on plans for a fishing trip to Thomas Hill Lake.

That one is a cooling lake for a big coal-fired power plant, which results in one arm of the lake holding warmer than normal water year-round, and very good wintertime fishing for folks who are willing to sit in a boat and freeze their butts off. It will be good to get out and get some fresh air, and will be a good opportunity to exercise the boat motor prior to our trout trip to Taneycomo next week.

Mrs. Augie’s greenhouse comment tripped me up a bit. We’d talked about it some in the past, but she hadn’t ever shown a lot of interest in having one, or maybe she did and I just didn’t pick up on it. Now that I know it’s something that she wants I will rearrange the project list a bit and move that one way up towards the top.

Storage shed with a basement sounds like a good thing to have. Sun room is for sure a good thing to have. We absolutely love the room that we added on to the house a few years back. I vote for doing both. ;-)
