but does Def Leppard really deserve to be in a music hall of fame?

A fair question.

This is my litmus test for the Rock Hall: how influential were they?

I don't no recall reading about a zillion band's being influenced by Def Leppard, though Pantera, Slayer, and Metallica were allegedly influenced by them. On that basis, I'd say they shouldn't get the nod.

However, they arguably launched the 1980s glam metal boat - the "Mott the Hoople" of the Reagan years. Given the popularity of that genre in the 80s, I'd say they should get the nod.

Using my litmus test, amongst this year's inductees, they are more deserving than Stevie Nicks and Radiohead but not as deserving as Janet Jackson and The Cure.

I am an 80’s Metal drummer. Saw Def Leppard back up Ozzy (with Randy Rhodes). What this band did in waiting for Rick Emmett to leaner how to play with one arm completely changed my opinion of Joe Elliot. They can fill hours on Hair Nation with their materials. Yes, they belong. BTW, so does Deep Purple.

I love Deep Purple....I was too young to see Ian Gillian and Coverdale....Joe Lynn Turner I saw with Rainbow who were fantastic.....and of course Dio (Sacred Heart) solo in 84...I think they’re better then overrated Stones.

I always wondered what those words were at the beginning of that.

It’s better to burn out, then fade away....

I prefer my Rock and Roll bands to have a drummer with two arms. I am a purist that way.

“On Through The Night” and “High and Dry” all the day long!

There is no denying her talent or influence or Rock Hall membership with Fleetwood Mac. But she’s being inaugurated as a solo artist...how many genres did she launch or entertainers did she influence though her solo work? I believe that list is short.

On Thru the night, high n dry, and pyromania are, in my opinion, their best albums. In terms of popularity, Hysteria, was a hit maker. Do I own It? Yes. It’s very 80s glam hair band-esque. Bringing On The Heartbreak versus Pour Some Sugar...not a question in my mind on which is better, IMHO.

Good woman. Most girls only like Hysteria. Some don't even know the first 3 exist. For me, it's the first 3 only. Loved thoise albums so much as a kid. This band has been such a disappointment to me ever since.

The country turned black musically like overnight around 2000 or so.

It was the late 90's when a lot of rock music decided it HAD to have rap in it. Lasted till about 2003. in retrospect, I have come to like a lot of those Nu Metal albums from circa 2001 or so. But at the time, I wouldn't go near it. My screen name was chosen on a whim in 2000, so that tells you what I was listening to at that time. I remember specifically having Raging Slab on in the backround when I chose the name on a whim.

Indeed, I am :) I remember when Hysteria was released and could not get over how vastly different it was from everything prior. It was as they went from hard gritty rock to melodious pablum with some hair tossing to maintain a shred of cred. I quit listening to them after Hysteria.

Stevie is a genre all to herself.

Without her and Bob Welch Fleetwood Mac would still be a nothing but pretentious British band with no taste or execution.

Now there’s a band that brings back memories. Practically the soundtrack of my growing up years. Boy were they a huge band when I was about 8-12 years old. Everybody had Hysteria and everybody loved nearly every song. Still can name them. Animal, Rocket, Women, Hysteria, Armageddon, Run Riot, Don’t Shoot Shotgun, on and on. How many times have I heard Pour Some Sugar on me?? Must be thousands. Back when I was a kid, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing these songs.

Having said that, do I think they are a TRULY “great” artistic band? No. By the late 1980’s they were fading and by the early 1990’s they had been flushed from the charts by Nirvana et al and rap. That wasn’t entirely their fault but it does show they did not have the range of ability or depth of talent to compete with other big bands for long-term influence. They were unable to survive the glam rock collapse that they helped define.

Still... those memories! I’ll probably still be listening to Hysteria in the old folks home...

Again, I don't doubt her talent or that she was one of the reasons Fleetwood Mac wasn't relegated to that chapter of Rock featuring Paul Butterfield and other blue-based artists that never hit the big time. And I don't doubt that her artistry in FM helped spawn careers or influence people.

However, the singers of The Who, Led Zeppelin, or The Rolling Stones are NOT in The Rock Hall as individuals despite most of them having meaningful catalogs of solo material. Daltrey and Plant and (to a lesser extent) Mick basically created the "golden god" frontman persona that miles of others have copied. But their solo material hasn't launched a thousand careers.

Please understand this isn't a fight with Stevie. It's a fight for principle.

You’ve told me that before I think

Fort Worth was always somewhere I went on my way to Possum Kingdom lake or heading up 287 to Amarillo and the mountain west as a lad

Now I’d prolly prefer it given Dallas has changed so much

I probably have :) I should probably switch to my new account. It’s more suitable.

Dallas is superficial, snooty, and very liberal. Not my cup of tea. Plus Fort Worth has the Stock Show and an excellent downtown area
