17-year-old Walmart employee quits over store intercom: ‘Nobody should work here, ever’

Some people know how to make an entrance, while others specialize in exits.

On December 6th, 17-year old Jackson Racicot posted a video titled, “How I quit my job today,” on Facebook. As of today, the video has been viewed nearly 300,000 times.

The teen quit his job at the Walmart Grande Prairie Supercentre in Alberta, Canada, by reading a prepared speech into a store-wide intercom system, Insider reports.

“Attention all shoppers, associates and management, I would like to say to all of you today that nobody should work here, ever,” he said over the speakers. “Our managers will make promises and never keep them.”

During his remarks, Racicot noted that he has been working for Walmart for over a year and a half, and calls out his assistant manager for insulting him.

”[Management] will preach to us about how they care about their employees but about a month ago, my boss, assistant manager Cora called me a ‘waste of time,’ and management did nothing.”

I worked as a front end cashier for Walmart. Worst job I ever had. WM has a lot of problems.

No kidding. In the WM near my house, all the welfare-trash seem to take delight in abusing the cashiers there.

He may have outsmarted himself.

That video could follow him throughout the rest of his employment life. It will likely cause him to miss out on some significant opportunities.

Teens and Twenties need to realize that rants on the Internet will likely have long-lasting impacts on their futures.

I know the employers on here will absolutely not tolerate an employee's displeasure. However, some places really do treat their people poorly, turning them into Democrat voters. Be careful what you say and do - everybody. Democrat, leftist leaders WILL take your business away from you.

Eventually W.M. will be replaced by an even worse big box store.
In the mean time it kind of appears they ate all but eliminating human cashiers.

"Sounds like Cora had a pretty good read on things. "

My take as well.

“The teen also claims that Walmart managers attempt to cut costs by reducing full-time associates to part-time workers, something that the behemoth retailer has been accused of in the past.”

There is no claim in this, it happens I went to work for Walmart upon retiring from the military for about 6 months in 1995. I worked four sections and was the leading sales associate for the store working sporting goods, hardware, automotive, toys, and I was training cashiers. I was not an assistant manager.

When I was interviewed, and they asked me about expected salary, I set a number and they agreed to it based upon a monthly schedule. They informed me they paid on an hourly scale at that level but they would make the adjustments to get to the number we decided upon. That was successful until after the Christmas holiday run when they stgarted allowing me to change my schedule to cover the hours, personally. A new assistant manager came into my section, and that was stopped so they were shorting me of the correct pay level.

When the customer run slowed, they cut everyone in the store in hours. When I brought it to their attention, I was told everyone was paid at the hourly scale and Walmart was allowed to cut those hours to make their costs. I mentioned they had made an agreement with me on the overall salary, they retorted take us to court. I shortly afterwards put in my resignation, and after a whole lot of posturing, they gave me a copy of the closing documentation that they would rehire me. I haven’t talked to them since but to sell them back their stock I had at cost as the price to service it went up higher than the profit from it after I quit so they could get it back as you couldn’t sell it to anyone else.

They pay the minimum wage of the lowest state they have stores in no matter what the cost of living is at the location. And they punish people they get into it with with cut hours or removal of all hours until the person has to quit in self defense but do not fire them. This way they don’t have to pay unemployment insurance.

They are as crooked as they can be and don’t care. They’ll use you like a bad prostitute and then blame you for something stupid and punish you until you have to leave. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg with how they treat the immediate area of their competition.

He showed very poor judgement and character in how he handled the situation. If he had legitimate gripes, there were better ways to address them. Using profanity to belittle belittle your employer and management is not impressive.

Yeah. Great idea dipshit. Flap your yapper all over Facebook on how you, at 17, could rationalize quitting your job while burning what few bridges you have. You’ve completely destroyed your credibility for at least a few years. I’m sure the idiots in Facebook are hailing him and telling him how great he is to “stand up to the man”.

If there’s an employer out there who would see this antic as a plus for their business, I’d love to know who they are!

“...and Walmart had no record of him working there.”

Not even a W2?

Did they change computer systems after he left?

“...15 cash registers yet only 2 are open with huge lines,...”

Minimizes the number of customer-thieves from using self check-out. Manager gets a bonus for keeping his head-count/hours paid cost low I guess too.

“At 17 he’s limited in his opportunities. And for older workers supplimenting retirement, it may be the best they can do.”

True enough. One takes the opportunities they have to get to the next opportunity. At 19, with a history of steady employment at Walmart, he would be in a better position for the next job, especially when competing another 19 year old with no work history.

Nonetheless, common sense used to be - don;t bite the hand that feeds you, ...even if it isn’t the best meal. Common sense also meant - don’t burn your bridges, ...people will smell the stench when you are forced to swim back to the other side, unless you drown first.

As a manager at several companies I can tell you that HR will only provide a “Yes, he worked here” for liability purposes. They also tell their managers to do the same.

I will only provide a reference once I am no longer with the specific company as then it a personal reference and not connected to the company in any way.

I tell my past employees that I will always provide a reference but they should call me first so I know what I should/shouldn’t talk up. I’ve had only a handful that I haven’t had good results with improving. Those wouldn’t know how to provide a reference anyway.

“...Customer service is not valued as much as cutting labor costs. “

Reminds me of wisdom I saw posted in a very rural Virginia gas station decades ago. “Quality, service, price - Pick any two.”

They won’t remember. My son worked there for a few years, even an employee of the month once. He had to go through an extensive background check recently, and Walmart had no record of him working there.

Google is Forever.
